Magnus

Magnus is a tiefling warlock who appears in the Undesirables campaign. He is an NPC played by I.W.

Description

Appearance

Magnus is a red skinned tiefling that stands a little under six feet tall, not counting his horns. The horns share the color of his skinand stand almost straight up from his forehead, curving slightly back. His long, jet black hair is kept tied back in a ponytail and his eyes are a solid yellow color. A neatly trimmed goatee and long sideburns adorn his angular face. He has a long tail that is mostly hidden due to his coat. His long coat that he is always seen with, over his otherwise mundane attire, is a burgundy color with brass buttons and fasteners.
When casting, usually his magic appears in a flash of pink and when he summons his weapons they typically have a nature or floral theme to them.

Personality

A very kind man through and through, Magnus is fairly soft spoken and doesn't seem to carry a lot of confidence in his personal abilities. Humble from birth, he rarely puts himself on any sort of elevated stature, instead happy to give praise to others for their accomplishments. While this might deter people from having their own confidence in him as well, he is convicted to his goals and his friends.

Biography

Background

Magnus was born in Westfall in early 129AT. The exact date has been lost as he was discarded by his unknown parents in the streets as an infant and found by a homeless beggar who sheltered him until he was old enough to walk. He grew up without a name and with so few of people accepting him as a tiefling, no repeatable nicknames either. Forced to steal food for survival and generally looked down upon for what he was, Magnus was frequently beaten by store owners that caught him and the local bullies. His life turned around when he was still young when he tried to witness a parade for knights that were returning from war. Eager to see the soldiers labeled 'The Heroes of Westfall' the excited nine year old watched with wide eyed awe until some teenagers tried to take the spot he had found. Being shoved and harrassed by the older children, one of the knights dismounted intervened, kneeling before the tiefling child and thanking him for his support of the Westfall military, effectively ending any conflict for the rest of the parade. Magnus would later learn that this knight was Prince Brendan of Westfall and that he had gone to battle with his knights.
From that day, he aspired to be a knight and would often try to break up fights between other street kids. Being weaker than most of them, he would often flee once attention turned on him. While it was often ignored that the victims were able to escape because of these actions, Magnus gained a reputation for being a coward for never standing his ground and fighting. After one time he wasn't quick enough to get away and taking a more brutal beating than ever before, he cried out to no one in particular that he could be a great knight if someone gave him a chance. Unknown to him, he made this declaration in a Fairy Circle and his plea was heard. A pixie considered it a binding contract and granted the tiefling powers of a Warlock. This was never told to the young teen, and so when he started using new magic by accident, he assumed that it was more latent abilities coming from his hellish lineage. With these newfound abilities and being able to summon a weapon to himself at all times, he finally adopted his name, believing Magnus was a fitting name for a mage knight.
The first official job he responded to was a call to action by Dame Kearynn Colburn. A posting for mercenary aide in stopping a barbarian warband. As the only one that answered, the small group of knights and soldiers quickly found that they were no match for the force they met, losing almost all. Magnus stayed with the company, despite prejudice for his bloodline, eventually earning the trust and respect of the female knight. Aggrevated by this, the war priest accompanying left for the capitol, taking any survivors that wished to leave with him. Magnus and Kearynn, along with the few that stayed stormed the camp, eventually overcoming their foes, but at great cost. There were six survivors at the end, with both Magnus and Kearynn gravely wounded. Knowing that the tiefling would somehow be blamed by the war priest when he returned with more soldiers, they mended his wounds as best they could and told him to leave for his safety, giving him his reward with a bonus to buy passage out of Westfall.
With his first success and the lingering words, both good and bad, he set about the Eastern Continent, doing small jobs here and there. There he met Vitaal 'Axescar' Olingaranu, a goliath woman being taken advantage of due to short term memory loss. Intervening on her behalf, Magnus surprised the woman by showing a kindness and honesty she was not used to. Declaring that she would stay by his side to help him just as he had done for her, Vitaal has become Magnus' greatest friend and ally. With the beginnings of a powerful team and the desire to be more than what people saw of him, they made their own mercenary group, using a name intended to become their misnomer. The Undesirables.

The Undesirables

As founder and leader of The Undesirables, the first job Magnus took was to help Kearynn yet again. The hamlet she had moved to was being overridden by bandits. Magnus knew he and Vitaal wouldn't be able to handle it on their own, so he sent out letters to warriors and put openning postings for the team, hoping to gather enough people to help. The two became ten and not wanting ot wait anymore than they had to, they took off for Westerlose.

Relationships

Vitaal

Magnus and Vitaal have a very close friendship that some might mistake for a romantic one at times, due to Magnus' kindness and Vitaal's intensity. They have a strong respect for each others' capabilities and are very loyal to each other. The goliath woman has never shown vulnerability to any other, confiding only to the tiefling her pain and worries involving her memory troubles. It is very evident that either would die, and in Vitaal's case kill, for the other.

Nuha Sisavi

With Magnus' goal to make a better name for people of races and reputation less than well received, he came to the young woman's defense when they crossed paths. While Nuha doesn't connect to others well, she does seem very attached to Magnus, stating that he feels the same to her as her brothers do. They haven't been friends long, but it has been noted that even though she's not a formal member of their mercenary team, she still prefers to be in their company as opposed to others.

Magnus' legacy is strongly tied to the fate of the Undesirables, a story still being written for future generations to come.

Notable Items

• Verdant Manor: A medium sized mansion given to him by the former owner. It is not named for the color, but for the skin color of this owner, a goblin. it is currently used to house the members of the Undesirables.

• "The goal is to make the word a misnomer. When people ask 'Who saved this city?' they will be forced to say 'The Undesirables'. If we do enough good, it becomes synonymous with 'hero'. Maybe then they'll give the half-orc that eats lunch by herself a chance, or the drow might only be sitting in the corner because the light hurts his eyes and he may actually be a good person. We are all just as capable of being heroes like anyone else. We just need to be given a chance."
