The Last Wolf
The last Arctic Wolf died 91 years ago at the hands of the other Twilight Guardians. Amaruq Saila carried the heaviest burden of them. The Arctic Wolf was always the most difficult position. The werewolf lycanthropy being the most prone to rage, the Arctic Wolf was usually reserved for the strongest of will in the tribes.
What stories are told of Amaruq as a Guardian were that he was both willful, but extremely passionate. He was given the Gift of the Werewolf in hopes the two would balance each other out. When Amaruq first took on the role, he was very good about controlling his lycanthropy. However, as he became familiar with it and the power it provided, he started becoming irritable with his tribe. Most say that it was his passion that started to get the better of him. It would upset him when people were lost to known dangers like weak ice or wandering into yeti territory. His heart was still in the right place, but the werewolf in him made his demeanor less approachable when expressing these frustrations. The longer this went on, the more volatile his mood swings became.
Eventually he would black out and find himself far from the tribes and Kassimavik when he awoke later. It was painful for the people to watch him slip deeper into this state of mind. His anger continued to grow, but it was all still because he had the best interests of the tribes and the Duskmen at heart. His final straw was when he came to one morning in a pool of blood, dozens of bodies wearing the garb of his kinsmen.
Unable to recall what had happened and what he had done, he approached the other two Guardians. He expressed how he had become a danger to the tribe, what he thought he had done and how long he’d been suffering and losing himself with tears of sorrow. Amaruq begged the Snow Leopard and the Polar Bear to end his life, end his suffering, for the protection of their people. When they asked if he had someone in mind to take his place, he adamantly refused to pass along his lycanthropy. The other two were reluctant to end the life of a fellow Twilight Guardian, especially since he had no replacement, but the pain in his eyes was enough to convince them. They ended his life painlessly, his last breath spent thanking them as he slipped away.
The Duskmen are an honest people, and so the full truth of what had happened was told to all the next time there was a gathering in Kassimavik. None of the tribes could believe what they heard, saying that none of them had been lost or killed recently enough for such a thing to have happened to their people.
An investigation was set to find out what the full story was. Finding the place he had told about, the Snow Leopard saw the massive amount of carnage wrought by their fellow Guardian. What was found, however, was that it was not Duskmen that had been killed. Following the trail of blood and bodies back to the source, the Snow Leopard found a ship belonging to pirates. They had disguised themselves as Duskmen to lure out ice mermaids to hunt them and Amaruq Salia, the Arctic Wolf, had killed them all for the atrocities they had done to their friends under the ice. With the report brought back to the tribes, Amaruq’s body was brought to the very center of the Evertwilight and buried in mourning and with honor.
