Lover's Knot
A decorative knot most commonly formed from two different types of fiber to symbolize the two separate individuals who desire to entwine their lives as one.
This knot has been a common item between lovers, as part of wedding ceremonies, or severed when a couple separates. It is made together, each individual bringing their own fiber to add to that of their beloved. Young people in love will sometimes knot two limbs of a young tree in this manner and if the limbs stay intertwined for a year, then their love is true. Some may fashion the knot themselves, others may take their material of choice to an artisan to make it into something special and still others may commission the work from a master.
These knots find their way into bracelets, rings, and necklaces. When fashioned from metal wire, or fine thread they may become part of earrings, or delicate meshwork.

History & Usage
History
This knot has been around for generations, in various forms. No one knows what the 'first' knot looked like, or what it was made from, or even if it was considered as a lover's knot. Like many customs, the first examples are blurred by time.
Everyday use
This knot is made by lovers who commit to one another. It is used as a symbol on inns and taverns. Couples may exchange lover's knot rings when marrying. Vows may be renewed with the knots.
The knots may adorn garments, or hats or other items of apparel. They may be used to tie packages as a sort of 'code' that the item within belongs to the person the sender loves above all others.
Cultural Significance and Usage
The knot signifies lovers, or commitment - the tying of two lives into one whole. Over time, it's become much more casual and the strong significance that it once had is more dilute now.
