Praetor

Praetor is a title given to a member of the Council of Midara. The Council is made up of 156 members. 12 of those members are called Grand Praetors, while each have the right to appoint 12 Praetors. One of the Grand Praetors is known as the Master Praetor and is the leader of Midara. The Council was first formed in the year 4301 SRE (third era), and at the time only consisted of Istalot, Waldensteel, and Galemount, and therefore only 3 Grand Praetors. After the council took over all of the continent of Midara, as well as most of the continent of Werrin, the number of Grand Praetors have increased, to their current total of 12.

Terms of Praetors

A Grand Praetor is elected. Midara is split into twelve voting provinces, each able to elect a single Grand Praetor to the council. The term for a Grand Praetor is 6 years, and can be re-elected any number of times. A Grand Praetor can appoint up to twelve Praetors to serve under him. They have no term, and are in or out of office at the discretion of their Grand Praetor.   The Master Praetor is voted upon by the people, as well. For the fairness of the votes, each of the twelve voting provinces are given 100 votes, represented by the percentage of the population that voted for a Grand Praetor. The one with the most votes is elected Master Praetor.

Responsibilities

The Master Praetor serves as the leader of the government, the Midaran Council. The Grand Praetors advise the Master Praetor and oversee their Praetors, as they draft and vote on legislation. Although many bills must be voted upon by the general populous before being voted upon by the council, the council otherwise has full control over the laws that are passed and enforced in the two continents.
