Tanzer

The tanzer is often maligned, but they provide an essential service to those individuals who need such services. Many who take up the profession of tanzer started out to allievate the suffering and stigma that comes from unwed motherhood, and the poverty that arrises when a family must feed an additional babe.

Tanze is any substance that prevents a pregnancy, reduces the likelyhood of conception, or causes a miscarriage; and those who produce such substances are called tanzers. While nearly any herbalist, alchemist, or apothacary can make a tanze, a skilled tanzer helps a woman to find just the right blend to ingredients that will be effective without causing serious side effects. As tanze is often a mild poison, finding the right assortment of herbs and ingredients that will be effective without causing undue illness to the woman is a bit of an art.

Some tanzers are more than peddlers of petty poisons, and many offer services that allow them to operate openly in society, such as midwives or pediatritians. Indeed, rare is the tanzer who openly operates as such. Itinerant or wandering tanzers do exist, but few people would trust such a peddler.

Most tanzers are skilled herbalists and alchemists, and many know at least a bit about medicine. Some few even have some skill with magic, and can provide a magical proof against pregnancy. Such professionals are rare, and few that would employ the services of a tanzer can afford an arcane preventive.
