Firefade Myth in Manifold Sky | World Anvil

Firefade

The apocalyptic myth of Firefade is a uniquely Forgist foray into eschatoloty.

Summary

In brief, during the Firefade, the 'fiery energy' with which the Creator forged the world will begin to fade - and, with it, sunlight and moonlight, the pent-up energies of life itself, and, in a final death-blow to the Manifold Sky, the 'worldstuff' itself will also fade into oblivion. Indeed, the fires of creation have been fading in intensity ever since the 'great facade' of the Manifold had been erected at the end of The Curved Time, leaving only the smouldering embers - literally the magma beneath every Cube layer and figuratively the as-of-yet unsolved mysteries of existence - into the present epoch. The Firefade will not be a wholly unfortunate experience, however, as the last living beings to freeze to death in the dying husk of the Manifold will see through the artifice of the Creator himself and into the mysterious beyond, learning more in those last moments than any who had ever lived before about the nature of the Celestial Realms.

Historical Basis

Legends hold that the Firefade was a dire prophecy uttered by one of the last holy men to profess allegiance to the god of fire and destruction that predated the modern Creator deity - a sort of spiteful rebuke of those who had fully converted to the up-and-coming faith of Forgism over the old gods. Whether or not this story has any historicity remains a mystery, as records of this time are fragmentary and the story has changed through centuries of oral tradition.

Spread

While not initially a matter of religious cannon - as set forth in the Hymns of the World-Forger and Universal Artifice - the mythos of the Firefade does not conflict with established teachings and is widely accepted among Forgists as a sort of 'recieved truth.'   While Knappism shares a belief in the Creator and his role in shaping the known universe, it is also somewhat entrenched in the Epicyclism of it's Rostran Esotericist forebearers. In the Rostran conception of the universe, such an end would merely mark the end of the current 'cycle' and a brief return to the realm of spirit and forms as embodied by The Curved Time. Eventually, all souls caught in such an event would be reborn as new hylics into a new temporal realm.
