The man who would eventually become known to the greater Manifold as The Garbage Man is born in the Commonwealth city of Tartagloam.
The story of how the destruction of Tartagloam during the War of Reunification led to the birth of the 125 Hands, the apotheosis of The Garbage Man, the theft of the Menger Catalyst, and the near-destruction of the Manifold Sky setting.
The man who would eventually become known to the greater Manifold as The Garbage Man is born in the Commonwealth city of Tartagloam.
The city of Tartagloam is besieged, and eventually destroyed, by Voxelian forces. Civil order breaks down and never fully returns. An industrial accident caused by airship bombardment leaves tens of thousands of nearby citizens polymerized by toxic chemical vapors, leading to Tartagloam's nickname as the 'City of Mannequins'.
Several survivors of the Siege of Tartagloam come together as a bloc to eke out existence among the ruins of the city. Unified by a shared indignation at their circumstances and exposed to Forgist philosophy by Verdial members of the group, the nascent 125 Hands take on violent, anarchist leanings.
The 125 Hands develop their cellular organizational structure and spread from Tartagloam along the land and air trade lanes to all nations in the Medial Tesseract. Eventually, smaller cells arrive in Rostran- and Verdial-held territories, though these Hands are less successful at infiltrating these societies. The first safe-houses are established.
Over the course of two years, 125 Hands Phalanges break into various Commonwealth of C government records facilities and perform systems intrusions to destroy public information about their founding members. The operation ends when Data Engines Limited maintenance personnel discover inconsistencies in the records and institute more stringent anti-intrusion measures on the government autonets.
125 Hands Phalanges working within the Navigator's Guild uncover evidence of high-level members of that organization using their clout to favor certain businesses over others. They then leak this information to journalists. As a result, the Navigator's Guild is forced to remove and disavow numerous experienced navigators to maintain the perception of neutrality, narrowly avoiding serious s diplomatic incident with the various Medial powers.
After the loss of his parents, siblings, and girlfriend during the Siege of Tartagloam, long exposure to Forgist philosophy under the 125 Hands, and severe personal stress due to having to hide his many criminal acts from law enforcement, The Garbage Man begins to show symptoms of Folded Hands Syndrome - including delusions of grandeur and supernatural knowledge about the Celestial Realms. Unbeknownst to his fellows, he actually did begin to acquire transcendent knowledge through his hallucinations - in violation of the known laws of Manifold physics.
125 Hands Phalanges provide intelligence information to Voxelian bards-recursant about a secret Manifold Conservation Society project to build the MCSV Celestial Praxis, a 'doomsday' weapon. This sours diplomacy between the MCS and the other Medial Powers. Later, the Voxelian spies are themselves outed to MCS agents by the Phalanges, causing these spies to disappear into MCS secret prisons, further souring relations between the MCS and Voxelia.
In several incidents spanning the years 9993 and 9994, Phalanges of the 125 Hands triggered diesel runaways in various infrastructure autonet nodes in the Manifold Conservation Society capital city of Bunker Primus. These incidents not only disabled critical infrastructure in the immediate region, but dozens of firefighters and maintenance personnel were killed in the ensuing disasters. The incidents ceased with the capture and execution of the entire Bunker Primus Hand.
The Garbage Man learns how to use the Word, a supernatural 'language' that allows him to manipulate reality on a limited scale. He uses this knowledge to transcend his three-dimensional form, becoming a five-dimensional being that can traverse the extra directions present within the space of the Manifold. This manifests as 'teleportation' and 'summoning,' drawing objects from one cube layer to another instantaneously and with potentially devastating effects to anything caught in the affected area of space. The Garbage Man chooses his own nickname, based on his previous profession, and stops responding to his given name.
The Garbage Man uses his powers to teleport numerous Digits of the 125 hands around the Manifold to attack highly visible civilian, military, and government targets. This provides a diversion while The Garbage Man himself, along with several of his most trusted agents, breaks into the Vianne Tributaries Facility and steals the Menger Catalyst.
