Thane

In Astari society, Thanes are aristocratic nobility of the second rank, below the Jarls who govern large areas of a kingdom and are marked as a class of retainers, ship-captains, land-owning farmers, and guild leaders.
A Thane is one engaged in the service of a Jarl or King, whether in the household or in the country, and while a Lord is free to appoint as many Thanes as they wish, in practice, the title is meaningless without land.
