Amberle Morrow

Amberle Morrow is the only daughter of Winnie and Petra Morrow. She was born later in their lives (they were both in their sixties), with Winnie having six miscarriages and then being told by doctors that she’d never be able to conceive before Amberle, her miracle child was born. She was such a blessing that almost the whole of Butterfly Garden Neighborhood District came to celebrate her naming day.
The Morrows are one of the richest and most distinguished families in Gardinya Lyra. Winnie has been serving on the town council for over 60 years, talking over the Butterfly Garden spot from her mother before her, and her grandmother before that. The Morrow women have always been known for their political savvy and abilities to get things done ‘for the greater good’. Amberle, however, does not seem to share any of these qualities. Petra Morrow nee Tova runs one of the most successful trading businesses in the kingdom. He is hardly ever around, constantly back and forth trading between Gardinya Lyra and Ver Coasta. Amberle does not have a very close relationship with her parents, preferring to duck into shops and pretend not to see than rather than having awkward family bonding moments in the middle to the street.
Amberle grew up lacking for nothing except her parent’s attention. Her father was always away ‘traveling for work’ and it was ‘too dangerous to take you along, my dear’. Amberle would always beg to go, wanting a child to see the world her father would talk about in his stories. Grownup Amberle can not think of anything worse than having to leave her safe little home and safe little life. And her mother, after finally realizing that Amberle was not the perfect child she’d always been hoping for (a child just like her, of course), left Amberle to caretakers and resumed her all-important Councilwoman position. Amberle turned into a prop on her arm instead of a child loved for herself.
No, Amberle was a strange child. She had eyes the same color as the great river that were almost too large for her face, and seemed to stare through a person without actually seeing them. She always seemed to be focusing on something in the distance, as if she could see other people in the room that were not actually there. She hardly ever laughed or smiled, and it seemed like the things most children would laugh or smile at went completely over her head. But Amberle was polite, and well-mannered, and silent enough for her mother to parade her all over town at various social functions (she hated going by herself when her husband was not in town) even though Amberle would spend most of these functions hiding behind one pillar or another.
Amberle excelled at schooling. She was able to read and write the earliest of anyone in her class. She could full scale memorize and copy books, a skill thought very important for an archivist, and she was pushed towards this career very early on in her schooling, taking her internship at St. Lyra’s Library at fifteen. She more than excelled in this internship, and after the required minimum ten years at the library, she was moved to the archives. The head archivist, Plia Denton, has been very pleased with her work, and has given her a super-secret project that she is currently working on.
Amberle doesn’t have many friends, not fitting in well with any of the pre-set peer groups in early school or university. But she can always count on her best friend who she met on the very beginning of early school when a fellow classmate stole the bow out of Amberle’s hair and, Ever Morganstern stole it back for her. They have been ride-or-die best friends since. They are the complete opposite in personality, Ever, outgoing and adventuress, while Amberle was quiet and thoughtful, but they hardly ever fought about important stuff, and knew that most importantly, they could trust each other with their secrets (and Ever has more secrets than Amberle could ever imagine a person could). Ever is always the one dragging Amberle out to do fun things – to see new plays at the theaters, go through walks through the gardens, or sneak out of the city to climb Goddess Waterfall. Ever always has some adventure she’s determined to drag Amberle along with. More recently, Trinity Bellstorm, someone who is mysteriously new in town, and Hot Sergei, who owns a store no one will talk about, have been added to their friend circle by Ever. Amberle is not sure what to think about these new friends, that are more Ever’s than hers, but will hang out with them anyways. The mysteries around them are ripe for her to discover.
