Miss Maverick

Margaret "Maggie" MacIntyre (a.k.a. Miss Maverick)

Maggie MacIntyre AKA Miss Maverick was London's first official superhero, an aviatrix who suddenly developed the ability to fly when she survived a plane crash by flying out of the cockpit. Her debut as Miss Maverick on the front steps of the Daily Herald marked the beginning of the Golden Generation of superheroes and her death in 1993 at the age of 90 was one of several markers of the end of the Bronze Generations.

Personal history

Maggie was already a somewhat daredevil aviatrix before she ever learned to fly herself. She spent a good portion of her 20's flying around the world in a de Havilland DH.60 Moth given to her by her late father and narrowly escaped severe crashes from anywhere from Croydon to Cairo. In August 1932 on a routine journey back from Europe, a problem with her plane's engine caused it to veer off course and lose altitude rapidly. With very little safety measures in place, Maggie resigned herself to her fate only to find herself hovering in the air metres above the steaming pile of wood that had previously been her plane. The moment was captured by a Times photographer and graced the front pages of newspapers for weeks. Maggie, afraid of herself and what might happen, stayed anonymous until around a month after her plane crash, she helped save several children from the top floor of a burning orphanage in central London, attracting even further press and speculation. After the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Herald, Thackery Thorne, referred to Maggie as "Little Miss Maverick" in an article and suggested that she had somehow faked both moments for attention (an incomprehensible statement given both the amazing feat and the fact that she had remained anonymous), Maggie, never one to back down from a challenge, quite literally dropped in for a chat on the front steps of the Daily Herald as Thackery Thorne was leaving for the day to introduce herself to the world as Miss Maverick. When questioned as to why she had dropped the 'little' from her moniker, she looked down at him from her position hovering a few inches in the air and said "Why, Mr Thorne, I do believe I'm taller than you".
