Ebonwood
"The wood of the Domi fleet was unlike anything among its peers, and its loss is a tragedy for scientists, engineers, and kings alike."Ebonwood is a type of wood that was harvested from the now-extinct ebon oak trees that were native to the isles of Learbof. The wood is well known for its total resistance to fire, granting the Domi who utilized it a great advantage against the elves, who primarily relied on magic, particularly fireballs, for defense, during their conquest of Demia.
Properties
Physical & Chemical Properties
Ebonwood is unique in that it is entirely flame resistant. Infernos can rage around it and the worst that will happen will be that the wood becomes warm to the touch for a few moments afterwards. This is why the Oak Palace is the only building in the royal district that survived the Great Fire of Tharsa while the rest of the district was burnt to cinders.
History & Usage
Cultural Significance and Usage
Modern Demians have a cultural reverence for the material as one of the factors that allowed their ancestors to triumph over the elves and establish their own homeland. Ebonwood shields kept the fireballs of the elven mages harmless and the treasures held within the Oak Palace are still around today because of the material.
Distribution
Law & Regulation
Since the founding of the Crown lands of Demia, all ebonwood has officially been the property of the Ekärti. Though precedent has prevented any ekärti from utilizing their stores of ebonwood, the ban on others owning samples of it has persisted and men have been jailed for upwards of twenty years for smuggling pieces of it out of the Oak Palace.
