Kolu Republic

"Make no mistake, coin is always king in the Republic."
— Common Saying
The Kolu Republic is a mercantile republic and is a great power within Kedizlim and the wider Black Ocean world.

Structure

The Republic is organized by the powerful merchant families of the major cities, with the patriarchs of the great houses voting upon the Ki'Omu, the head of state. The Great Houses are decided based upon wealth, with the 11 most wealthy houses making up the council of great houses, the Imohele. The Ki'Omu is responsible for presenting a cabinet of a Marshall, a Steward, and a Grand Admiral, who oversee the military, the economy, and the fleet respectively, who are approved by a majority vote by the Imohele.

Public Agenda

The Republic is concerned with protecting its trade and sovereignty. They seek to open trade routes with other nations and defend their assets from hostile powers. They are in something of a cold war with the Crown lands of Demia over influencing the interior lands of Kedizlim as well as trade interests across the Black Ocean.

Assets

The Kolu Republic possesses a large navy to protect their trade, as well as a wealth of currency from said trade. While their land forces are smaller than expected for a nation of their size, their soldiers are professional, making them an effective fighting force and more than capable of defending their territory and interests.

Demography and Population

The Republic's latest census from 550 L.E. indicates a population of 3,700,000. The Kolu represent only a plurality within their own republic, though they dominate the cities and have a de facto monopoly on political power their total population is just shy of one and a half milion. The Republic is one of the most urbanized states in the world with just under half of the recorded population living in cities. The rural population is largely composed of indigenous human groups as well as more recent migrants to the area.

Territories

The Republic occupies the Northern and North Western coast of Kedizlim as well as the Broken Isles. The majority of the large settlements are on the coast with the notable exception of Ulusonu which is located on the banks of the Asimara River roughly 70 kilometers inland.

Military

The Kolu Republic maintains a relatively small professional army in order to protect its interests both at home and abroad. The Republic itself tends not to deploy its troops abroad unless it considers it absolutely necessary, favoring diplomatic solutions whenever possible. The Republic navy on the other hand is a lot more conventionally formidable, standing as the largest military fleet in Kedizlim. The navy is primarily utilized to combat piracy along the Republic's most vital trade routes.

Technological Level

The Kolu are among the most advanced societies of the Black Ocean World, possessing printing presses, dark powder, and compasses.

Foreign Relations

The Republic in general aims to present itself as an open available trading partner for all nations and has a well-cultivated reputation as a level-headed player in world affairs. That said, its trade interests have lead to a number of conflicts with other geopolitical entities, both large and small.

Education

Education within the Kolu republic is privatized with families patronizing different private schools and tutors to educate their children. Education is thus generally high quality, but out of reach for many members of the lower classes, entrenching the existing social order.
