Session 10: Salvage Operation Report

General Summary

Captain of the hired crew is a dwarf named Wolgar Windrune. Virion buys a book - based on a book I grabbed from the lobby - from Winston. The book is tied to the Wine Subplot. They play with Bimms and Raiden. Wolgar asks the party retreats to your quarters, and they sail in heavy rainfall.

They have a distant run-in with the Gnasher, a Sea Prince vessel with a black flag emblazoned with a red dragon's wing. On the eighth day of travel, Virion goes to speak with Melody - telling her not to "try anything", given she has sometimes resorted to sabotage in pursuit of her aims. Melody promises she has no ultieor motive, nor wants to be here, but she needs the money for her village reconstruction progress. Virion responds by doing herself a favor, and sticking true to the story she told him. He threatens the woman with his gun, and she responds by brandishing her rapier, and telling Virion to leave, as his presence is upsetting Bimms.

All but Melody fail to scale the ship, and Mystan really struggles. Luckily, their use of grappling hooks allows them to pull themselves up after failures. Melody also has an owl familiar. Mystan struggles. Again. Even more. Christ he's bad at this - he failed four times in a row. It was a DC 10 check. He has a fucking +2. He had a 60% chance of success.

Mystan casts Detect Evil and Good - and senses thousands of abberations. Skittering, crawling, pressing in on his mind. Looking around, nothing is present. Mystan's face is covered with fear. Melody is spooked by his response, and Virion - who's been cleaning his pistol out of water - is unresponsive. Fishcod, for their part, summons their pact weapon. Mystan notes Fishcod's pact weapon is fiendish.

Checking the aft chamber, it's door is shut by some mass behind it. Virion cuts his cutlas through it, revealing a strange mucus. They break the door down, and see a swarm of awful spindly things. Insect sized pallid men skittering on the ground, with long spindly limbs and strange spikes growing in patches. Their eyes are madly gazing, their smiles grinning. The mucus covers the room, and the swarm comes near. Mystan breathes a cone of lighting, shocking the swarm and revealing a much larger (melody sized) spindly man, and a... inky black human-thing standing on the ceiling, with tentacle-arms ending in claws. Mystan then uses Spiritual Weapon on the guy hanging from the ceiling, and steps into the accursed room.

The larger spindly thing leaps towards Mystan, grinning and gnashing - but missing. Virion steps in, activating his Bladesong, and stabs the larger long-limbed fellow. It dies, giving a cry in an alien language that man was not meant to know, and fire leaps from it's shriveled, bug-like corpse to the swarm, burning a few of the creepy things. The black entity steps forward and swings a tentacle's hook at Virion, who dodges. It then tries to bite at Mystan with a mouth full of teeth, finding only metal. The swarm tries to do the same, once again meeting only metal. Melody fires a crossbow bolt at the tentacled aberration, which hits true. Fishcod enters the room, flanking the inky darkness and stabbing it with their greatsword, and the creature makes a noise somewhere between a coyote's howl and a man drowning. A second, more viscous hit yielding a noise akin to nails on a chalkboard given form, shivers crawling down everyone's spines as if Styrofoam was rubbing against itself.

Mystan takes a warhammer to the entity on the ceiling, bashing against it and making it bleed black blood. A spiritual dragon's claw then slashes it open, revealing it's innards are nothing but tar and sludge, pustulating and oozing. Virion then uses Magic Missile to kill the rest of the swarm. Within the room is nothing but mucus, a staircase down, and rubbish. Belowdecks as much, much more entities - and there are four times as much in the captain's quarters as the fore compartment.

They open the door, and Virion casts Frieball in the room, burning all the creatures save one - which Melody knocks unconcious via Sleep. Mystan brings it outside, and it reacts not the the sunlight. Upon awaking, it's only reaction is hostility towards Mystan. It misses it's assault, and Mystan decapitates it, the beast deflating. Virion, for his part, found the Captain's Log - and reads it, but doesn't want to share what's in it, saying the ship was merely lost and died. Melody notices that the journal makes Virion go pale. This whole place, to Mysan's Detect Evil and Good, reeks of some sort of dark consecration, the epicenter of which is the altar. The rubies seem safe, so Melody snatches them up.

Melody sneaks downstairs in the aft room, and Mystan notes that something (two abberations) are dwelling on the other side of a door, which has been barred shut with rusty iron spikes. This room was once the galley, and it is littered with detrius, food, and bones. Dwarf bones. Dwarf bones bearing the marks of knives - which means they were eaten, by an intelligent creature. There weren't any dwarves on he crew of the Emperor of the Waves - at least not this many. None of the bones are human.

Heading down a trapdoor takes them into the paritally flooded cargo hold, ruined cargo all about. Melody lights it up with Dancing Lights, illumintating more debris, four corpses in the bow, and near the corpses there is an intact box. Mystan knows - and tells the party - that those corpses are actually undead. Mystan uses Turn Undead to make three of them push away further bow, but one aquatic corpse resists. It stands above the intact chest, it's flesh blue and rotting, it's body encrusted in barnacles and coral growths. These corpses do not appear to be dwarvish - one is elvish, one is littlefolk, the other two are humans.

Virion upcasts Scorching Ray, having four lances of fire all streak towards the unturned undead. All four meet their mark, and the drowned zombie is blown back, burned, and stands back up. Virion turns on his bladesong, and allows Mystan - with help from Raiden - to step forward, and casts Spirit Gaurdians, halfing the movement speeds of all non-party members within 15 feet. They take radiant damage if they enter the area too. And when they start their turn. This kills one of them, and the other three are badly hurt. They assault Mystan with their swords, and he is deeply injured, breaking concentration.
