Session 37: Ingo the Drover Report
General Summary
While the shenanigans of last session were happening, Ciaran was helping the guard plan the extraction of Ironbeard: an armed guard convoy will escort the prisoner to the lift Seklyn will make, guided by Ciaran as a pathfinder.
Visiting Faeryn: 20th, but Ciara wants to slip away druing the festival. Probably the 17th and 18th.
Extracting Ironbeard: set in motion before the festival, though the extraction can happen afterwards.
Now it is the 14th of Slaying, and the Fall Equinox. Seklyn wonders if Lt. Johnny should be brought into the fold regarding the jail lead. Virion points out, though, that something is up with the guards and they don't know who's compromised. They consider trailing Lt. Johnny or Warden (Lt.) Cortez Stonehorn. They also want to investigate the Owelands and Ingo the Drover.
Virion points out that they want to check the Oweland Estate before the performance due to the message saying "by festival", but Ciara counters how will Virion enter? Virion wants to break in.
Virion also wants to know where the fuck is Tomas Primewater. Handily, it's not just the Fall Equinox; it's also the seventh day of the week, and is thus a Primewater Banquet. And a big autumnal one at that!
The party plans to split their investigation as follows:
They all may help one another on their respective investigations if one ends early.
Rosa's body - her throat was slit and she suffered no defensive wounds - is in the care of Father Brinehanded and Krag the Gravedigger. Mystan casts the spell, and Rosa's corpse shakes. Her eyes roll back in her head, and her mouth speaks raspily.
Daggers are commonly used by guards. There was no blood in the latrine. The time of day puts it after Captain Fireborn sent for the guards to take Diego to Castle Feldren, but before the caravan left.
Seklyn plans to stakeout the garrison by watching Cortez's window from the roof of the wicker goat. To get a spyglass (1000gp), he offers Winston his Dragonhide belt as colateral to borrow the spyglass for the day. Winston accepts. One of her kids is sent to watch the store.
Mystan heads to the barracks to question the people in the watchtowers who could've seen Rosa's killer enter or leave. Lt. Johnny explains that Monica and Escobar were there 4pm-6pm. Monica is in the mess hall, Escobar the barracks.
Mystan vists Escobar first. He's a burlier man, with patchy facial hair and curly black hair. Mystan has Escobar confirm his shifts, and learns that during that shift several people entered and left the latrines, including Rosa, Johnny, Carlos, Estuban, and Fireborn. Oddly, Captain Fireborn was in a normal uniform and only could be identified by his peg-legged limp. Escobar never saw him leave, though lots of people he only sees leave or enter, not both. Escobar saw Rosa enter, then Fireborn enter, then Rosa leave.
Then, Mystan goes to talk to Monica. Entering the mess hall, he finds her drinking (eating? Ingesting) some soup. She confirms most of what Escobar saw, covering for everyone leaving and entering. Furthermore, the timeline lines up with when Fireborn was gathering everybody for the mission.
But why would Fireborn do that? Why was he wearing his armor. Why did he do this whole death and cover up thing? Was the Captain himself the shapeshifter? That doesn't really add up. Plus, why send only one guard to kill Diego as a double and not just use four crooked or loyal guards.
So then is there a leak in the guards? If so, who?
Virion enters the banquet and is greeted by a lavishly dressed Maria Primewater. This banquet, to celebrate the equinox, runs from lunch to dinner. There is alcohol from the Snapping Line and Empty Net, as well as smoked salmon, gourds, and venison.
Virion drinks some alcohol to try and get a buzz, but accidentally gets drunk. Still, he is able to slip into Tomas's room undetected. The room is covered in dust, but there are two clues:
Virion escapes, barely - though Eliander and Eda know he was in there - and hides the diary his house.
Meanwhile, Ciaran is using Gaseaous Form to search Ingo the Drover's house, as Ingo is at the party. The house is one story and has an attached storage facility that's only accessible from the outside. Within the house is a few empty rooms/halls, a bit more storage, a bedroom, and a kitchen/dining room. Ciara drops the spell in the bedroom and tries to open the chest - but it's locked. Failing any method of lockpicking, they just Shilellagh it. It's full of clothes and whatnot, though oddly there's some clothes at the bottom that clearly aren't imperial or Jan Pana. What culture are they from?
The desk just has writing materials and other office supplies. The kitchen just has food. His next objective is to search the other storage in the house, and then the addition.

- Tomas's diary sits on the nightstand. It's last entry was on the 36th of Silver - five week ago. The 37th was when Maria said he was away on business, and was first wearing the big stone earrings.
