Session 44: Ringshadow Report
General Summary
Maria hosts a party with no food - for once - and instead there is a great Ribbon Dance that symbolizes purification. The ribbons are white and everybody drinks the white drink (which is actually black). The whole thing is to purify the community and resolve to be as pious as the saints and martyers who went before. There is then a sacred fire and offering of the new harvest burned at the church with bear oil to honor Los Santos Del Moradin.
As the town is fasting, no food is served at the Primewater Mansion beyond the White Drink, which everyone must wait to drink until after the ribbon dance. Maria speaks of purifying the community and thanks all for coming, saying that these are troublesome times, and that in such times we must all strive to be virtuous. She is wearing new earrings.
The Aryzmuit may perform during the ribbon dance, but no matter what it is mostly an affair of those who either embody purity or seek to purify themselves of various maladies (sickness, wicked magic, wrongdoing, etc). The dance is a complex array of ribbons and white encricling the Primewater's fountain, and is met with whoops and cheers. Maria is wearing white and performs, symbolizing her attempts to be a more righteous matriarch. Her brother is nowhere to be found.
After the White Drink is served, Talon Delmeriv pulls Selina/Seklyn aside to tell them about the Half Dragon stuff. He relates the following information:
Becoming a Half-Dragon involves a ritual that requires obtaining rare components through dangerous quests. Powerful dragons hold the information close to their chest, and use becoming a Half-Dragon to reward followers for destroying rivals. The Order is no different, and refuses to share this information, unless Selina does them a great service out of kindness. As such, they refuse to give him a quest, insisting that an opportunity to oppose tyrants will present itself.
While the Talon does not have the information Seklyn seeks, they do have a present for the monk, as a token of good faith by the Order: Bracers of Defense. After all; if Selina is to do something for the Order, we can't have her dying in the process.
After the dancing and drinking, the town gathers and marches to the church. This is a longer march, and much more solemn. The townsfolk are quiet, heads bowed in prayer. They stop by their homes, gathering foodstuffs and carying it with them. When they arrive in the church, a sacred fire that is kept lit all year is shown and and an offering of the new harvest is burned along with bear oil to honor Los Santos Del Moradin.
Seklyn then concots a plan with Rainbow on Waterfalls for Selina to do her ceiling act in the Empty Net. She intentionally falls, with the littlefolk illusionist helping make it look convincing. When Selina gets home, she and her wife have a bit of an argument about whether or not Seklyn should go through with this - especially becase Selina didn't run this by Lusa.
The 19th begins with another service at the church where the Feather Dance is held. Everybody else has been cooking the new harvest since last night, and once the food is announced there's a massive feast. The feather dancers travel to The Leap and dive into the ocean one by one to commemorate the forgotten dead. Then, the community heals by congregating at the Oweland estate. There's feasting, more stomp dances, etc. Which continues through the night as another vigil.
Father Brinehanded once again leads the community in a mass for all those who died unknown and unremembered.
The feather dance sees various dancers in costumes adorned with feathers of local birds (namely the whites and greys of seaguls and the blues and yellows of kingfishers) - all of them those who lost family in warfare or accidents - dance in a procession from the church, all the way to The Leap where they dive off the cliff and careen into the ocean below. They swim to the beach and have a private meeting, while the rest of the town travels to the Oweland Estate.
The Owelands have everybody bring food that was prepared the previous night to their feast, and the town eats the first of their new harvest. While Father Brinehanded was anxious about the food being tainted, all goes well. People party, and the atmosphere reaches a crescendo that afternoon when the rings, high on the horizon, eclipse the sun.
Seklyn sneaks into the Oweland house but is immediately seen by Eda. She inquires about Selina's injuries, and Seklyn informs the matriarch that the Outcasts' healer stiched him up. He then spins a yarn about a fake drink called "Dragon's Piss" (1 part beer, 1 part whiskey, 1 part wine). Approaching the bar, Seklyn speaks with the tender - a member of the guard and Eda's nephew, Cazador Oweland - who tells him of how his responsibilites led him away from the elven druid in the Silverstand. With Cazador's advice, Selina returns to her wife Lusa.
"Did you take care of what you needed to, dear?"
Seklyn smiles, "Yes."
Meanwhile, at the prison, Faeryn breaks the warlock - Morgana, a diva - and the sorcerer - Baili, a frosty dwarf - out of their bonds. Then, the five spellcasters come up with a plan: they will use illusions to cover & clean up the damage and have Morgana (a bitch) impersonate the dead guard. The bodies and broken doors are all hidden. Morgana successfully decieves them all but has to go upstairs to file a report.
Baili can cast Polymorph, but it's concentration. The group comes to agree for Ciara to leave first, that way she can rest unharmed. He escapes successfully, and takes a short rest in an alleyway.
As Faeryn escapes, Morgana sends fae to find her beaver fur coat.
Faeryn and Ciaran ride into Saltmarsh one last time, to drop off a note written in undercommon. At the northern gates,
