Makani
Makani, the Floating Continent. Ancient trees reach high into the sky, blanketing the world below in darkness. For the high flying denizens of this land the darkened world means nothing for them. For centuries they have lived above the trees, within their ancient floating cities, long since forgetting all that lies beneath the canopies. Due to their elevated lifestyle, the cities boast high populations of flying citizens such as Owlin, Aarakockra, Air Genasi, Kenku, and even the rarer Aasimar and Fairy have been tempted to live in the sky.
However it is to be noted that just because something has been forgotten, that does not mean it does not exist.
Geography
The sea around the continent dips downward into vast trenches before it raises again next to the continent. This trench is about 200ft across and is 500ft out from the shore line of the continent, producing an illusion that the continent is floating.

History
When the world was new, natural predators found their role in the ecosystem, hunting the bird people of Makani to near extinction. Banding together with help from powerful druids the Avians were able to lift their great cities off of the continent and away from their predators. WIth their new homes in the sky, the Avians were able to grow and expand their population once again.
Once leaving the land behind, the Avians began their new life and built their world around living in the sky. Flying ships and other inventions to increase flight have been created to help the denizens travel to and from the different cities. Once they have sustained their lifestyle in their cities they had no further need to travel downward to the land below the canopies. Overtime, forgetting completely what lies below.
But it wasn't just the Avians who evolved. The predators on the land had to change as their lives completely reversed with the loss of their prey. New people and cities grew below the canopies of the trees. The predators below, learning to live in the shadows. But who pays attention to those in the shadow?
