High Plains Estate

When Megizel Medilazzo settled on the resource starved plains west of the Silver Sea, many thought that years of infighting within the powerful family had finally driven the man insane. Yet within a decade Megizel's High Plains Estate was the single most important location east of Dawnside.   Subject to unpredictable weather and poor irrigation, the aptly named High Plains had defeated all previous attempts to cultivate the land for either produce or livestock. Using a combination of brute force, careful breeding and experimental magiculture, Medilazzo transformed the entire region into an economic juggernaut, even reviving ancient fishing villages along the eastern sea and opening trade routes up and down the tributaries.   For all his success in agriculture, Medilazzo had little practical talent in the industry. Instead, he had a keen eye for talent and a silver tongue. Leveraging his position in his family's massive mercantile chain, he developed intimate relationships with visionaries in the fields of livestock, farming, and other related industries, convincing them to join him in a quest to capitalize on the unclaimed east with a combination of gifts, flattery, and debt. When he had poached all the best minds and ideas he set his plan into motion, moving his entire family hundreds of miles into the eastern frontier and staking his claim. Much of the success of his venture hinged upon the magicultural genius of his wife, whose skill he cherished but did not credit.

The Long Night

In the aftermath of the Starvation, the formerly erratic young master of the estate, Cyrus Medilazzo, along with his spitfire girlfriend Wyldine Lockett, shouldered the responsibility for caring for his employees and the inhabitants of hamlet nearby with dedicated focus and compassion. For a time, the estate was a bright spot in the midst of the chaos choking other major settlements as they struggled to deal with the terrifying, never-ending darkness.   All that changed after a tragic visit from the Baron, the Guardian of Mercy's new, infinitely more wicked incarnation. Few know what truly happened, but what is certain is that the Medilazzo scion fell to madness and sought to protect the survivors of the attack by taking away their masks - the external symbol of personal identity that all Maverotians wore following the Starvation. Thought to be irremovable, The Mask Collector developed magical techniques that would allow him to take a person's mask, reducing them to mere shadows and themselves and - he believes - removing them from the Baron's notice. Also lost that night was Medilazzo's foreman Tor Vallerjo, who uncharacteristically sacrificed his life defending those fleeing the hamlet.
