Shark Seal
Are they a subgroup of arctic mer? A Qhil-created monstrosity between seal and man? The result of a group's ritual gone either terribly wrong or horribly right? Cultural myth become truth? No one knows for certain. What is for certain is that on the northern ice fields sit small wooden villages, populated by people whose only outward distinguisher of appearance are the eyes and what color their coats are. They live isolated lives, not bothering anyone else.
The only issue with their solitude is how they behave when someone comes close.
They welcome the lost and stranded with perfectly-practiced mannerisms probably learned from Syle-- they have a physical resemblance to them at the very least. After their prey's guard is down, they tear them apart inside one of the many basements and preserve the remains. If some escape, they hunt down their victims on land and underwater. The coats serve two functions: to protect from the cold, and to allow them to change from human to monstrous seal. In the water they chase down from under the ice whoever runs, and at the weakest points they emerge, dragging the unlucky souls down to freeze and drown.
Unlike mer they can't destroy the ships themselves, or call up storms. Instead they hunt in storms and with the tides, ambushing prey and dragging it home.--Surgeon of the Queen's Sorrow, Lucas Starker
