Church of Lust leads a rebellion against the Sovereign
Throughout his rule, Sovereign Aravok strove to bring law and order to his realm. In addition to stomping out criminal organizations, the Sovereign’s forces targeted any group he considered “disruptive to the peace of the kingdom”. Among the groups that drew his attention in this regard was the Church of Lust.
Aravok was not bothered by the brothels run by the church, but he felt they were used as a cover for disruptive doctrine and possibly seditious activity. He demanded that the high priestess of the temple of Lust in Draknos, called Leira, reveal the secrets of the temple and open it up for inspection and regulation by the Sovereign’s guard.
Leira refused, and warned that if he wished to push the church that Lust will be angered and bring her rage against Arakeen. The Sovereign was not amused by her resistance and ordered the priestess arrested. Leira managed to escape from the city during the night with many of her fellow priests and lay worshippers.
Outside of the city of Draknos, Leira reached out to other groups who were marginalized by the Sovereign’s recent crackdown; including the Minotaur Tribes of the Western Hills and a small Gnomish Enclave that was built in the south. These groups were more than happy to join with the charismatic priestess and her followers.
This rebellious force first struck a guard outpost in the Western Reaches of Arakeen. They managed to overwhelm the small guard post and block the great trade route by controlling that outpost. Realizing that the situation had gotten out of hand, Sovereign Aravok called upon the church of Viridian to stand beside him in putting down the rebellion.
The Sovereign’s forces met the rebels in the Western Marches and in a series of several engagements utterly crushed the rebellion. Leira was executed for her crimes, and her temple was raised to the ground. As the Sovereign’s guard attempted to access the ancient catacombs beneath the temple, the wrath of Lust manifested. The site was cursed, and the soldiers attempting to gain access to the catacombs were turned to stone. Finally, the entrance to the catacombs was enchanted so that none loyal to the Sovereign or the Church of Viridian could enter.
In response, Sovereign Aravok outlawed the Church of Lust, and condemned all remaining lay worshippers to slavery. Through the years, various Sovereigns have tried to hire mercenaries to gain access to the catacombs but none have returned alive.
