Life, Death
Forces from Darkport interfere with Arakeenian succession
In the early part of Year 68, the High Priestess of Viridian told the Sovereign of a divine vision of his death before the year was out. Rather than risk the chaos that his father left upon his death, Korvas choose to use the time to pick his successor and prepare him for the position.
Korvas chose his second son, Aravok, to succeed him. Aravok shared his father’s love of tactical thought and was far more open to Arakeenian connections with other countries than his elder brother Forrab was.
Forrab attended the ceremony for his brother being chosen as the heir, and to all appearances seemed supportive of his father’s decision. In truth, Forrab was incensed at the loss of status Korvas’ choice meant for him. Forrab reached out to Lady Coldeyes and arranged a pact with Darkport if she would aid him in removing his father and brother from the path of succession.
Lady Coldeyes sent assassins from Darkport to serve Forrab in his vengeance. These assassins chose to strike the Sovereign and his heir while they prayed in the great cathedral in Draknos. Their attack managed to slay Sovereign Korvas, but as their blades turned on Aravok he was saved by divine intervention. An angel in service to Viridian appeared before Aravok and struck down the assassins.
Recognizing what had happened, Aravok knelt before the angel and offered his full and faithful service to the angel for his rescue. The angel, speaking the commands of Viridian, ordered the new Sovereign to reach out beyond his borders and seek allies against the foul servants of the god of strife. Aravok swore that it would be done, and then sought out his brother to punish Forrab for his betrayal.
Forrab was publicly executed at Aravok’s coronation and the new Sovereign announced his intention to forge an overland trading route to the lands of the west.
