Frost Faires
The Frost Faires of the North have become rather famous across the continent of Kithryn.
The chill, silent air is pierced by sounds of music and laughter echoing across the ice as the silhouette of tents begin to dot the horizon. Far still, though growing closer each minute as the carriage draws across the frozen lake. Soon, the shapes begin to take true form, thick hide tents forming stalls for trades workers as multicolored tents of dyed fabric hold entertainers after many fashions. The sounds, too, become clearer: merchants calling out their wares, cries of delight from crowds watching performances, the strange roar of an animal as it is made to dance by a skilled mage. This is the Frost Faire, famed throughout Kithryn.
History
Beginning about 50 years ago, the winters of Meridas became colder: glacial winds moving in from the south; waterways freezing and making transport of goods to distant lands more of a challenge; reduced crop yields and increased disease making survival more difficult for the peoples of the far north and distant south of the world's continents. Yet, the people of the north are resilient and determined to make the best of what life they have. And so, as Stilldeep Lake freezes over each winter, the Frost Fairs of the North have become a famous spectacle and distraction from the dangers of the cold.
The Frost Faires of Kithryn are inspired by the frost fairs of real world London, of which, the last occurred in early 1814.
In the early days of Icebreath, merchants from the surrounding nations of Thiafia, Fuiringa and Grodsveld travel over the frozen Stilldeep Lake to set up camp. Tents and kiosks go up almost overnight and don't come back down until the end of the turn.
