The world of Melnara has existed for approximately 20,000 years, and as far as anybody can tell, the same group of Great Ones have reigned over it for that entire time. Aaldir the Lightbringer shines the light of the sun on Melnara, while Emera the Lady of Dusk shelters Melnara in darkness during the night. Lyarus the Archon ushers in life, while Iaris the Darkveil whisks the dead away, all while Khonas the Undying King tours the cycle of life and death eternally. Tytis the Law Bearer forever tries to wrangle order from Takasis the Change Bringer. Thoxia the Gathering Tempest spreads storms across Melnara while Xilus the Everflame ignites wildfires and guides hammers througout the forges of Melnara, both sharing domain over mortal warfare. And as the others scheme and toil, Zuris the Quiet Watcher presides over the rain and oceans, ever observant, ever remembering. As unfathomably powerful as the Great Ones are, they are neither omnipotent nor omniscient. A host of spirits, manifestations, demigods, and ascended mortals help them administrate their divine domains. Some, such as Nyvia the Shadow keeper, serve a particular Great One. Some, such as the Kraeta the Tactful Warrior, assist in managing a particular domain. Others still manifest from the combined beliefs of thousands upon thousands of mortals, as the bards of the world seem to have manifested The Evermuse. Many of these entities shift their portfolios and allegiences over the centuries, spinning a shifting web of relationships that forever vex mortal clerics and scholars.
