This is a really compelling idea for spreading evil worship. The journey of the unfortunate reader sounds quite insidious. I'm curious, is such a book explicitly magical (or otherwise supernatural), or just a clever strategy to find susceptible readers?
I suspect that there is some kind of undercover magic boosting the effect, some kind of hint of demonic essence that starts to mess with you if you get compelled enough state. not strong enough to be detected by more mundane magic-detecting ways and not strong enough to mess with any random John Smith, but helps along the process of corrupting the reader.
