Alice was born the daughter of a noble who was the Lord of the small town of Bellcreek in the northern region of the now defunct country of Pairnight. At age seven she discovered she was a mandant and at the same time, she had her first encounter with a guardian, a woman who saved the lives of many people when the inn in the small town caught on fire due to a stray lightening strike. This left an impression on the young Alice and she vowed to become a guardian.
Being the daughter of a Lord, Alice was expected to marry into another noble family when she came of age and her father refused to let her go to a mandant training school to learn mandamus at the age of twelve, instead sending her to a school for nobility in the capital of Pairnight.
At age fifteen, her father started trying to find appropriate suitors for Alice to marry, but she rejected all of them or in more extreme cases got the suitors to reject her by making it clear she didn’t want to marry. She tried applying to the Fantasmal Government to become a guardian, but she was rejected because she had no skill in mandamus. Frustrated, she did everything she could to learn mandamus on her own while dodging her parent’s attempts to get her engaged. She did part time work at her friend Lily’s inn to earn money to buy books on mandamus.
After two years she felt she was ready to apply again and this would be her last chance since the guardian school did not accept anyone past the age of seventeen. Unfortunately, by this time, Pairnight was heading into war with Lodomite to the north. As is it’s policy, the Fantasmal Government closes outposts in all principalities that are actively at war, meaning that Alice could not apply in Pairnight’s capital. In addition, to shore up an alliance with the baron over the northern region, Alice’s father arranged her engagement to Kevin Lashton, the son of the baron, who she’d known since her days at school. This time she couldn’t just get out of the marriage since the benefits would help her entire town survive the war.
Desperate, Alice decided to go to Leviton, the closest independent city with a Fantasmal Government outpost. As luck would have it, she met a man named Cal who was going in that direction on foot, since quickening in and out of Pairnight was becoming nearly impossible as the war ramped up. Cal spent the night at the Bellcreek Inn before continuing north and Alice convinced him to let her come along when he left. Her family tried to bring her back but failed to persuade or force her to return, thus causing her to be estranged from them and the people of her hometown. Cal, who was well trained in mandamus, taught her while the two traveled, and she was accepted as a guardian trainee when she reapplied in Leviton.
After joining the guardian training program, Alice met Karmandrian and Pathos who were her suitemates throughout the twelve years she spent in the guardian trainee program and became her closest friends. Her relationship with Cal grew over several years and she visited him often in Leviton where he had settled for the time being. The two eventually fell in love, but Cal left Leviton halfway through Alice’s guardian training and she hadn’t heard from him since.
Alice learned five years into her training that her hometown was destroyed in the war and her parents and brother killed. She felt extreme guilt of not being there to help them when that happened and wondered if things would have been different if she’d gone through with the marriage thus ensuring the Baron would protect Bellcreek. However, she resolved to not let this guilt rule her and instead trained hard to become an outstanding guardian. With Cal’s training and unique understanding of mandamus, she surpassed even some veteran guardians in skill.
