Greengale, USA
Located in the north-mid-western-southern state of [Redacted], Greengale was founded in the late 1800s by Seymore Eastman, a reputed noble from a far-off country, though no one knows from where, or how he established his vast wealth. Greengale was settled in an area with no real natural resources or strategic value, therefore there was no advantage to building there. In fact, it’s said that Eastman had to have many necessities brought in constantly at great expense. Greengale was also one of the last cities to gain things like electricity, modern roadways, vehicles, television, etc.
Because of this, Greengale was a very insular town. The population that lived there rarely interacted with the outside world and was often seen as backwards or even strange. The town had no exports, produced very little on its own, and had very few visitors from surrounding towns and cities, all of which were at least an hour away by car. It’s also believed that for much of its early existence, the people of Greengale did not participate in state elections or any sort of political or national issues, choosing to stay as sequestered as possible.
Despite all this, the few people who visited or relocated to the small town reported that its citizens were extremely friendly and welcoming. While the rest of the country struggled with world wars, civil rights, and the other major growing pains of a new nation, the small town of Greengale remained mostly unaffected and unchanged. It wasn’t until around 1965 that the town became more connected with the outside world and more people began to move there. This was after the nearby city of Urbis exploded in population due to the many manufacturing jobs that became available there.
Modern Greengale is much more typical of a small American town. It has all the resources and businesses that are needed to function including schools, a post office, police, fire, and other emergency services, a hospital, a myriad of shops and small businesses, and much more. Still, the town tends to stay insular and doesn’t reflect the wider trends of the state or country, choosing to remain an oddity. It’s said that this is largely due to the influence of the Eastman family, who are the descendants of the town’s founder.
The family remains extremely wealthy from generation to generation and often there is a member on the town council or in the major’s seat. Their wealth and influence help shape the direction of the town, and because Greengale continues to be a place of little importance, large corporations and other sources of external influence simply do not bother with it. In addition, the town’s charter is extremely strict on how and in what ways it can grow and change.
It’s only been in the early 2010s that Greengale really gained any significance or notoriety throughout the area. In 2013, an organization known as the Action and Adventure Club became very popular with the youth in Greengale and even started attracting kids from nearby towns and the city of Urbis. In addition to this in the summer of 2017, Greengale made national news when a gas explosion killed seven people, the only significant unnatural death to ever occur in the town.
From a geography standpoint, Greengale is mostly flat plains. Its only significant feature is a massive forest that borders the northern and eastern sides of the towns. This forest stretches to what people constantly debate is either a large hill or a small mountain, as its height reaches right around 1500ft.
