Astana Commonwealth
It was a blow to the realm on that fateful day, my wife and eldest daughter had been taken from me, and with Their death the certainty of Astana's future was thrown into question. I had another daughter, so the line of succession was intact, but she never took her duties as seriously as her elder sister did. I fear there will be some who sense weakness when she ascends to the throne.
- One of the last journal entries of Royce Caskmantle, Lord Regent of Astana
History
In 1012 AGF a meeting was had between all the major city-states east of the Wildlands, the discussion was about their very survival. The hordes from the Wildlands couldn't go west because of the Grim Paradise jungle and the Caswood river and the Oshon Coalition had established Thurgan's Buffer (Massive section of land turned into a network of fortifications). The hordes of the Orc and Gnolls were left with one choice, they fell on the eastern settlements like a flood. Even faced with their potential demise there was still pride between the factions, a compromise to unite wasn't reached, Instead they agreed to loosely work together as a coalition to drive back their enemy. Skirmishes were usually a victory for the coalition, but they couldn't stand against a united horde while they refused to fully unify, and with every pitched battle they started to lose ground. Two cities, Oradiff and Rohdon, saw that they will be wiped out if things didn't change. So they met and decided that if they couldn't change the minds of their allies, they would change the current regime. Oradiff was an Elvish enclave, they specialized in spies and deception, and Rohdon was a Human settlement that had been pushing the boundaries of alchemy. Together these two powers combined their strength and in a weeks time had in one way or another forged a coalition into a unified force. They pushed back the hordes and began to secure the borders.
Unfortunately with the external foe dealt with, murmurs started to be whispered, Some questioned the future of this new arrangement. The two ruling families (Caskmantle's of Rohdon and Shadeheart's of Oradiff) knew that more bloodshed and threats would backfire, so they proceeded to win over the people by funding great public works and united the two families by political marriages. They set up a parliament where the cities would be represented, but it was subordinate to the Regent (A position only someone with ties to Caskmantle or Shadeheart could occupy). Over the centuries a nation was forged, and the Caskmantles and Shadehearts were at the center of it, their lineage would go on accomplish great deeds and achieve a near deified state. They used this to further ensure the line of succession, the dragons themselves would approve of none other (according to the official stance at least.) Thus an organization was formed, devoted to maintaining the history, lineage, and integrity of the Caskmantle-Shadeheart dynasty known as The Servants of Astana.
