Kingdom on the Brink - session 20

General Summary

The party takes a moment to reflect on what had just taken a place, a gigantic titan like construct had risen from the sea and had destroyed two vessels, it being past midnight the party decides to rest. Before Oneiro goes to bed he remembers a piece of parchment he had hidden years before and pulls it out, what he reads leaves him in a exhausted state that he passes out with the parchment still clenched in his hands. The group wakes up, Ashara having dreamt of her past life and husband and Oneiro gripped in stress of his past, Hendred  tries to get Oneiro to open up with limited success. Kaylin approaches the group and thanks them for everything they've done for the Kuo-Toa and lets them know the party will always be welcomed with them. Oneiro suggests the idea that maybe the Kaylin and the Kuo-Toa should work with Lakeshore, as it could benefit both groups, Kaylin is apprehensive but Ashara manages to convinces her that it wasn't the time to shy away from such an opportunity. The group packs up and escorts Kaylin and a small group of Kuo-Tao to Lakeshore, the citizens stare in awkward gaze as the party makes their way to the mayor. Oneiro enters and mayor Volkan stands up to greet him when she notices Kaylin and the Kuo-Toa, Oneiro asks if she is aware of the previous night's events, she nods and presumes that it's connected to the Kuo-Toa and mentions how the Lagoon port shipping guild had left earlier in the morning, Ashara pulls a few Kuo-Toa outside and begins to teach them Dragons Chess. Oneiro and Hendred explain how the Shipping Guild had been bringing in the Kuo-Toa and slaughtering them to sell to the town, they propose a partnership between the town and the Kuo-Toa, Oneiro and Hendred leave Kaylin and Mayor Volkan to decide on the details. During the discussion Ashara could be heard raising her voice, trying to get the the Kuo-Toa to understand the rules, Oneiro tries to help but makes little headway, the Kuo-Toa priest pokes its head out and casts tongues (much to Ashara's relief). During Ashara's explanation she picks up a piece resembling Nyroth, the Storm Queen and suggests that the Kuo-Toa should build a bigger monument (A new lighthouse even) on the old lighthouse site, to bring glory to the Monolith, their eyes light up and they are gripped with enthusiasm. The party decides that their work is done in Lakeshore and leave the Town Hall, Ashara stops for a moment and points out how they stink, Oneiro pulls out an eye of a Mindwitness he had carved out back at the dwarven forge and tosses it in the bushes, prompting a light scolding from Ashara. She suggests they go to a bathhouse and plan their next move.  

At the bathhouse the group conversates when Hendred notices that Oneiro is talking to himself in a language she doesn't understand and asks if he's okay, he mentions it's just his dream and then he says something else in abyssal. During the conversation Oneiro talks about how he hadn't had the best life and Ashara makes a comment about how at least he isn't evil. Oneiro says something else in infernal, as if he's having an argument, he stops and grabs the parchment from his pack, handing it to the group.

You must guard your vessel, young fiend. When the humans flee west, when horrors of old begin rise again, when my home is threatened, then it will be time to make Oneiro understand. The Genasi fears what his companions will think, for good reason, but if he is to succeed the trials ahead then he must fully embrace what he has become.

The group looks to Oneiro and his eyes begin to roll back, then he begins crack his neck and stretch out, in a noticeable change in speaking pattern "Oneiro" remarks how it's been such a long time when he could do that, taking the silver dragons pendent off his neck he does something which causes an illusionary scene to fill the bathhouse and he begins to narrate. The scene begins with Oneiro being dragged into a cell by two creatures that resembles the dwarves but are on fire (known as Azer), they lock him in the cell and leave, the other "Oneiro" awakes and erratically tries to break free. A figure in gray robes enters the building and asks if they would like to be free and to retrieve what's been stolen from him, the fiend inside Oneiro replies that he would very much like that, the figure asks what he would be willing to do to receive such a gift, the fiend replies with "Anything". The figure states that he must keep his vessel safe, a group has plans for Oneiro, but it isn't the right time. The figure emphasizes that what The fiend lost will not come back easy, the fiend agrees and the figure hands the fiend a piece of parchment and a silver dragons necklace, she unlocks the cell and leaves. The fiend opens the cell and turns invisible, exiting to the building, sneaking past the initial group of Azer. He finds himself at a bridge guarded by more Azer, he casts finger of death, killing an Azer outright and transforming him into a zombie. The fiend orders the zombie to attack and cause a distraction, the fiend turns invisible again and walks over the bridge, he almost gets over when an Azer notices something is off, the fiend paralyzes the Azer in place and tosses him off the bridge. Moving forward to the gatehouse Oneiro/fiend get flashes of memories of their torture and of a elemental leading the experimentation, the fiend casts a darkness which causes a psychic horror on the guards and cause them to either die or flee.  The fiend realizes where he is and begins to head to the main building, hoping to retrieve what was stolen from him, after dealing with the guards on the causeway he summons his familiar and sends it ahead to scout. The familiar sees a Efreeti in the middle of the snow covered tundra, a wave of emotions hit Oneiro/fiend and he proceeds forward while invisible, his general area is given away do to the steam rising from his body and the sleet and snow evaporating around his body. The Efreeti congratulates Oneiro/fiend and is impressed by what its accomplished, the fiend tells her to step aside, she chuckles and says that isn't possible, as she continues to speak the fiend realizes that he's talking to an illusion and spots the real Efreeti and launches several bolts of force. As the last bolt hits he uses the impact to hurl her through hell, on her reappearance she summons an elemental (which is quickly paralyzed). the fighting quickly goes into melee, though with the extra power the fiend received earlier he quickly takes the upper hand, summoning an extra dimensional sword. At this sight the Efreeti applauds Oneiro/fiend and says that his grandfather will be quite impressed by the results of this experiment, she casts planar shift and disappears. The fiend ransacks the building trying to find what was stripped from him, with no success, with that the illusions disappear from the bathhouse and the fiend relinquishes control of Oneiro. Ashara says that Hendred can help with Oneiro's fiend problem, Oneiro shakes his head is says it isn't quite that simple. Gareth enters the bathhouse and the party catches him up on what's transpired in the last day, Ashara jokingly makes a few comments about Gareths state of undress, which he simply replies that she should keep her eyes from wondering. The group shares some stories from their past and decides to head out to Strongfare.

the first few days are uneventful, on the 3rd day the group finds their path across a bridge is blocked by an archer, mage, and rogue, the rogue that's on the bridge asks what the party wants, Gareth replies that they're just going to cross the bridge. The rogue shakes her head and says that they best turn back, the party responds that they really don't want to kill anyone today, the rogue responds that the lord she's working for won't allow them to pass and motions the mage to cast faerie fire (which the party dodges). The rogue sprints towards Oneiro and lands several blows, Ashara tells Gareth to protect Oneiro and sprints towards the mage landing a powerful strike, the mage casts phantasmal killer on Ashara (Who begins to see visions of her dead husband), which frightens her. The mage attempts to put space between her and Ashara, but isn't quick enough to dodge an attack of opportunity, The archer focuses on Oneiro and moves forward. Oneiro disengages from the rogue and uses second wind, Gareth uses burning hands on the rogue but she is able to completely evade the spell. Ashara can't move towards the mage so she launches a javelin instead, it (against the odds) strikes true, causing the fear effect to end on Ashara who then charges the mage in an attempt to grapple but the mage dodges. the archer fires another volley and moves closer as the rogue continues to focus on Oneiro, Gareth moves to engage the archer and launches his javelin of lightning, Oneiro disengages from the rogue. Ashara kills the mage and runs to put herself in between Oneiro and the rogue, the rogue realizes that Gareth is a better target and is able to sneak attack him with the archer flanking. Ashara and Gareth focus their efforts on the archer, the rogue attempts to flee, but Ashara cuts her off and strikes her down, Oneiro attempts to stabilize but sees the rogue is foaming at the mouth and just starts to choke her and ensuring her lasts seconds of life are agony. The party searches the bodies, finding little beyond some gold and a note which read:

Here’s the intel we have, the lord says it’s very much reliable, from a trusted source. The wench with the sword doesn’t like to stay down when you think she’s had enough, so stab a few more times just to be sure, The bearded lady with the hammer hits hard and is also a very adept healer, The one with the bow has a few tricks up its sleeve (emphasis on it, supposedly it’s made out of fire, not sure how but the lord is very convinced this guy is telling the truth). The human fighter likes to duel wield and has a javelin that can throw lightning. Once you’ve dealt with them meet us at the rally point, the lord once us to disperse these kobolds from the land and take everything they got.

After some discussion the group decides to try and find the rally point, Ashara finds the initial trail and Oneiro is able to follow it. They dismount the cart and continue on foot, as the sun starts to set they hear the sounds of metal off in the distance and run in that direction, Oneiro fires at the first human he sees (blinding the caster), alerting everyone to their presence. The party sees that a group of humans are fighting a band of Kobolds taking cover behind a fallen tree, Ashara charges the caster, who in response turns invisible. Two fighters and an archer turn their attention to Gareth, landing severe blows, Oneiro takes aim at one of the fighters and banishes him and proceeds to take aim at the other fighter. The kobolds seeing a glimmer of hope charge from their position, with one sustaining deep wounds, the kobold sorcerer repays that sin with scorching rays of fire. Ashara recklessly charges into fighter that threatened the kobolds and strikes him down, Gareth continues to get pelted with arrows and dodges the strikes of the fighter in front of him as the other fighter returns from his banishment. Oneiro provides cover as best he can and moves closer to support Gareth, Ashara moves to help Gareth but is too late as he gets struck down and a small pool of blood forms. The Kobold dragonshields move to overwhelm one of the archers as the sorcerer launches chromatic attacks of cold at the fighters engaging the party. more blood starts to pool around Gareth as Oneiro and Ashara down the last of the fighters, Ashara moves to attack the archer not engaged by the kobolds. As Gareths life starts to leave him he gets a vision of one of his experiences when first learning to fight, this shakes him out of his unconscious state and he rejoins the fray. The groups make quick work of the aggressors (managing to knock one out to interrogate), the kobolds count their dead and the kobold sorcerer thanks the party for their assistance, Ashara mentions they were just helping their fellow dragonkin and shows her dragon mark, the kobold is surprised by this revelation and speaks of a old prophecy and say it mentions a group that contained three dragonkin. Ashara inquired about the third member and realized the prophecy was meant for them, the party loots the bodies when Oneiro realizes that one got away. He searches for the caster, briefly picking up the trail but sees that the caster left at much superior speed then he anticipated. The kobold group shows reverence towards Ashara.
