Kingdom on the Brink - Session 23

General Summary

The group makes their way into the refugee encampment, there's a sense of despair in the air, the group walks through the camp unrecognized. They hear a commotion and move closer to it and see two groups arguing, they hurl several insults and the mage group accuse the mercenary group of murdering Erlathan Valfaren (Magic guild leader in Strongfare). Stormsong waves (causing Del Varis to rub his mask in frustration) to the mage group as they leave, one of them recognizes her and asks if she'll be playing at the inn later. The group continues to the city gates and are stopped by the guards, they ask for the groups papers, which throws the party through a loop, they explain they need to talk to the mayor. The guard sighs and explains that they can't just talk to the mayor, this wasn't some small town, and that if they want to enter Strongfare they need papers. The refugee situation caused some rapid measures to be passed, the gist being that anyone entering the city had to be self-sufficient (Shows steady income, had a certain amount of lump sum currency, or sponsored by approved people). Ashara and Oneiro takes out two bags of gold and the guard weighs it, being satisfied by the weight the guard heads to the gatehouse to draw up entry papers. As the party waits Stormsong starts to play a song, Ashara asks the group what exactly is going on, She isn't familiar with the idea of bureaucracy, as most of the group isn't actually from this area they couldn't answer her inquiries. After some time the group is given papers and allowed entry, Stormsong leads them to her patron so they can sell their goods, Stormsong points out some details of Strongfare (The Iron Spires and the great clocktower, Bathazaar's Sanctum, the library, the muesum). She arrives at her patron's shop, Banbi Quillspring, she introduces them and they enter her shop (except for Del Varis he stays outside and watches the area), Ashara opens the portable hole and proceeds to show off their wares. The party wheels and deals and manages to get some potions and diamonds, as this is taking place Del Varis finds out that for the next several days the public square of Strongfare will occupied with debates and elections concerning guild matters (election of a new leader for the guild of magic and deciding if the mercenaries should be granted guild status). The party asks her how to go about seeing the mayor, Banbi explains that Barrett Edelhart (the mayor) has been pretty busy with the refugees and the current guild situation so the chances of seeing him probably wasn't good, she continued and explained that the guilds were probably a better avenue to pursue if they wanted to get things done. They ask her to send a message to her guild master, Nevel Wildcloak, about a meeting with all the guilds they also enquired further about the guild situation. She explains that Erlathan Valfaren had been murdered over a month ago, destabilizing the current political situation, at about the same time the mercenaries had applied to be recognized as a guild. The party thanks her for the information, she gives them a few of her contacts for arms dealing and requests they just mention her name, and the group leaves to get rooms and swap information.

Stormsong leads them to the Messy Rose inn, as they get rooms they notice that prices are higher then what would be considered normal. Stormsong sets up and begins to play while her cat guards her tip jar, Hendred gets some hard alcohol and Del Varis plays some darts and tosses a coin behind his back into the tip jar, Ashara and Oneiro get a meal and take a bath before heading to the weapon dealers. Before leaving the group hears something about a halfling looking for help, in reference to an airship. Ashara, Oneiro, and Del Varis leave to sell off all their extra arms and armor and head to the magic shops, they go from shop to shop buying boots (with the fur), rings, weapons, belts, the alley was flooding with the amount of gold they were throwing around. This caught the attention of Salwor, he mentions he hasn't seen them before and asks if the group would be interested in some work, Ashara mentions they have heard of him if it involves an airship, Salwor responds saying he hopes it's only good things as he tries to keep a reputation. Ashara says they have others who would also be interested and Del Varis runs back, jumping from roof to roof and making quite a spectacle. Del Varis makes it back to the Messy Rose and finds Stormsong and Hendred eating, he sits down and starts to eat Stormsong's food and asks if they're interested in helping with an airship, Stormsong finds this concept peculiar and agrees and starts to help Hendred with her food (eat from Hendred's plate). They leave the inn and reunite at Salwor's workshop, he shows them a window with a illusion of the sky covering the walls and in the lower levels they see a airship being worked on. Ashara asks if they could use it once it's completed, Salwor explains that it'll take some time even after he gets everything, Ashara explains that it could be useful in battle, this catches Salwor off guard as it hadn't crossed his mind to arm it. They continue to go over the specifics of the mission and Ashara makes an offhand comment about starting another fire like Oneiro does, Salwor pauses for a few moments before continuing on, he gives them a detailed map and asks if there are any questions. The party asks if there's a timeframe for having this done, he says there isn't but his tone implies disappointment, expecting it to be done sooner rather then later. The party also asks if there's any information he has on the Misty Gardens (Jungle outside Strongfare), he mentions there are elementals, moving plants, ghosts of people who've died there, and different creatures fused together. The party takes out the portable hole and begins to divide up all the magic items they just got (In Salwor's workshop). The party heads back to the tavern, as they leave they see someone looking over at them and trips over one of the stands, they quickly clean it up and starts to leave. Ashara catches up with them and asks what are they up to (having a good idea why they were there), she starts to get louder and the party catches up to them, Ashara calls their tail a sneak thief and asks what guild they work for. Finding out the thief works for the Architects guild she tells them to send a message saying they want to meet with the guild master and lets them go. Stormsong and Ashara performs a duet at the Messy Rose and the party long rests, then sets out to find the power source for Salwor's airship.

They come across a border marker and see at the other side of the marker was a air elemental and a Chimera. Del Varis, Stromsong (casting spiritual weapon), Hendred moves up the path while Ashara moves up and fires at the Chimera and Oneiro moves up to the high ground and actions surges, firing a volley into the Chimera and banishing it. The air elemental moves quickly and attempts to throw Stormsong into the border marker, but she's able to maintain her footing, as Hendred started to move up she failed to notice her surroundings weren't as they seemed and shambling mound disguised as a regular bush starts to move towards her, attempting to ensnare her but failing. Del Varis and Stormsong concentrate on the air elemental with a series of inflict wounds, flurry of blows, and the spritual weapon which quickly destroy it. The Chimera reappears and and flies straight towards Ashara and Hendred, but gets hit by Ashara and then banished again by Oneiro, the shambling mound turns its attention to Ashara and tries to entangle her but fails. Stormsong and Del Varis move to fight the shambling mound, Stormsong delivers a a critical firebolt but as it hits it fizzles partially away, The Chimera comes back and Oneiro launches several more arrows which fell the monstrosity. With only the shambling mound left the group quickly destroys it, Oneiro and Ashara goes to scout out the cliffs but see that there's more smabling mounds in the water.
