Kingdom on the Brink - session 49
General Summary
The next summoning commences and a Dao and Frost Salamander appear, Rosemary heals herself and Merrigold starts to dodge. The Frost Salamander uses its freezing breath, but the party succeeds and takes half damage. Uriel and Rosemary move to engage the Dao (who tries to cast phantasmal killer on Uriel but Duromar counterspells it), hitting it with a smite. Merrigold and Duromar move to engage the Frost Salamander, Merrigold hits it with her flaming sword (which allows it to recharge its freezing breath). Rosemary lands a critical hit on the Dao and the Dao attempts to strike Uriel but both attacks are dodged, Del Varis moves up and stuns the Dao. The Frost Salamander uses its freezing breath on Merrigold, which knocks her down, but Duromar and Merrigold quickly overpower the Salamander and strike it down. Del Varis attempts to stun the Dao again but it resists, but under the assault of Uriel, Rosemary, and Del Varis the Dao doesn't last long. The party has a few seconds to recover, as that is going on the crowd starts to chant "flames, flames, flames" repeatedly, Merrigold switches out her flame sword. The summoning pool starts to gain a red hue and sparks of fire appear, a Phoenix flies out of the pool and into the air. Duromar and Merrigold stay closer to the back and the Phoenix strikes Uriel which sets him on fire, it then flies back into the air, avoiding attacks. Rosemary launches a guiding bolt which strikes the Phoenix and outlines it, Duromar attempts to banish it but it uses its legendary resistance. The Phoenix uses its legendary actions to fly down and peck Del Varis, which sets him on fire, Del Varis launches several needles at the phoenix (which almost hit but it uses its legendary resistance). Merrigold takes out her bow and fires two arrows at the Phoenix, but the damage is partially resisted. Uriel strikes at the Phoenix and the phoenix does a flyby attack on Del Varis with its legendary action. Rosemary moves up and heals Del Varis, Merrigold fires more arrows into it, Duromar tries to banish it again but it gets resisted. The Phoenix flies down and critically strikes Uriel. Rosemary attempts to use toll the dead but the Phoenix saves, Uriel and Del Varis continues to burn from being set on fire. Del Varis fires off more needles, which hit but the secondary effects fail to paraylze, the Phoenix continues to flyby on Uriel and Del Varis, striking them several times. Duromar tries once more to banish the phoenix, which succeeds, the party wins the pit fight, this leaves the crowds irked as banishing the Phoenix was a lackluster way of finishing the fight (grumbling that last year's fight was better). The party catches their breath Duromar heads back to the Wayward Goose, Del Varis tinkers with the fire lantern, finding out how to turn it back on (then turning it off before it burns him). Uriel, Gareth, and Rosemary go to scout out the fort they'll be defending the next morning, Merrigold heads to the market (the party tries to hype the crowd up about the win with limited success).
Merrigold looks around the market and eventually settling for a +1 shortbow, Del Varis catches up looks for a bag of holding, portable hole, and a ring of fire resistance. The shop owner takes out a scale as they're being paid in electrum and gold, as this is going on Merrigold sees someone with an entourage with an insignia of house Leagallow. Del Varis notices Merrigold and sees her staring at the figure he saw from yesterday, the one that scared the gnome he helped (Kingdom on the Brink - Session 48). Del Varis helps hide Merrigold as she continues to watch house Leagallow Halfling and then follows them as they leave, stealthily following them back to their inn (narrowly avoiding being found out). Merrigold and Del Varis follow them up the stairs, some people see Del Varis and notice he's not wearing clothes a higher class person would wear and approach him with questions. Del Varis thinking fast knocks them, this causes some noise, Del Varis carries them down and successfully deceives the patrons that they were drunk and he's helping them recover. Merrigold goes to the top of the stairs and deceives the people up there about what happened in the stairway, she cases the rooms and narrows down the rooms that House Leagallow is in to five rooms. She heads down and tells Del Varis she'll be here for the rest of the day, waiting until night, Del Varis heads back to the Wayward Goose. Uriel, Gareth, and Rosemary scout out the fort they'll be defending in the morning, it is starshaped with a moat, they start to write up a list of supplies they'll need. Duromar is back at the Wayward Goose inn, training with Bob, when a member of the Royal Bralorian Couriers approaches him and delivers a letter, Duromar thanks him. The letter reads:
Duromar, I am hearing murmurs that the royal council has been divided, three seem to be under the influence of House Bridgeford. There seems to be evidence that there are others being influenced, but it hasn’t been determined who is pulling the strings. A relatively minor house seems to be strong-arming the councilors that haven’t given their support, it’s house Leagallow, I need to find out more. All this to say that without a functional royal council the kingdom will grind to an administrative halt, suddenly the food scarcity doesn’t seem as innocent, how long has the Bridgefords been at this and what is their game? I need to gather more information, but with those involved wielding such power, it’s entirely possible for them to abuse kingdom institutions that serve the public trust. We need allies if the situation is to be made right. Lord Valeros
Duromar waits for the rest of the party to come back, Del Varis lets everyone know Merrigold will be gone for the rest of the day. Duromar lets the party know what he received and asks if anyone knows anything about House Leagallow, nobody does. Duromar goes on and says that while this is important information there's not much they can currently do with it and the meeting concludes shortly thereafter. Final shopping preparations are made, Del Varis and Gareth buy 40 flasks of alchemical fire and 60 vials of acid (at a discount), and Uriel gets 6 sending stones that are all connected, Duromar waits for his contact for the +3 Rapier but they don't show. Night comes and the village starts to go to bed, Merrigold climbs up the side of the inn and peers into the window of one of the rooms she suspects her target is in. She sees a meeting taking place and it looks like they are about to leave the inn, she climbs down and watches the entrance. The Leagallow entourage leaves, stating "everyone knows the plan now let's go", Merrigold follows them stealthily to the tourney headquarters. Merrigold sees the leader talk to the people guarding the building and then the group goes inside, Merrigold is unable to follow them so she runs back to their inn and begins searching the rooms. Merrigold finds some correspondence between Bellstar Tallshadow (who is the leader of the entourage) and Lord Kellan Leagallow, it appears several groups were sent out to different parts of the kingdom and they were to keep an eye out for a certain party of individuals. Merrigold runs back to the Tourney headquarters but can't gain access, she heads back to the Wayward Goose.
around 1 am Del Varis, Gareth, and Rosemary hear scraping sounds at their doors. Rosemary and Gareth go and open their individual doors, Del Varis decides to channel his ki and destroy his door (waking everyone else up), they are met by 3 Mytholabes (spherical constructs with many edges). The Mytholabes managed to split the party into 3 separate groups and fighting breaks out, Del Varis channels his ki to do extra damage against the construct and trades blows with the Mytholabe. Rosemary uses her quarterstaff but finds the Mytholabe is immune to magical weaponry, she then uses her unarmed strikes, Merrigold makes it back to the in after the fighting starts and assists Merrigold. Gareth strikes at the Mytholabe in front of him, finding out it's also immune to magical weaponry, he launches his javelin of lightning at it (finding out that lightning damage does affect it). Duromar helps Gareth and upcasts witch bolt, causing a surge of lightning to run through the construct. Uriel runs out of his room and casts firebolt at the Mytholabe fighting Del Varis, which misses and ignites a wall. The Mytholabe and Del Varis continues to trade blows, Del Varis is able to rust away several parts of the construct but the Mytholabe lands several devastating strikes on Del Varis. Rosemary and Merrigold flank their Mytholabe, Merrigold switches to a nonmagical dagger and strikes, causing a deafening scraping sound. Duromar maintains concentration on his witch bolt causing more lightning to surge, Gareth switches to his hand axes and repeatedly strikes the witch-bolted Mytholabe (critically striking it). Uriel assists Gareth by grabbing the Mytholabe and slamming it into the wall and then dragging it and slamming it into the rubble of the opposite wall (the same one that's on fire and is growing). Gareth strikes at the Mytholabe once more, which leaves him and Uriel deafened, but it finally destroys it, he then runs through the fire to assist Del Varis but Duromar casts another witch bolt which destroys it. Merrigold and Rosemary deal several critical strikes which destroy the last Mytholabe. The party the moves quickly to put out the fire with multiple blankets and Del Varis destroying the rest of the wall to make a fire break.
As the party contains the fire several inn staff come running up, trying to figure out what happened, the party explains and Merrigold gives them a quote and offers to repair the damage in two days. The party asks if they know what the constructs are and the staff says they're used in the tourney, the staff begins to leave and Del Varis hands them a bag, this seems to put them in a better mood. Duromar begins to cast tiny hut and the party begins to exchange information, when Merrigold finds out about the letter from lord Valeros she explains her connection to House Leagallow. Merrigold recounts how she was following some associates of House Leagallow during the day in hopes of finding her wife, she then explains her adventure to the tourney headquarters (explaining how she believes the party is who house Leagallow was looking for). Uriel starts to pass out the sending stones and emphasizes how the party needs to be better about staying in contact, if the party knew what Merrigold did they could of laid a trap instead and have captured Bellstar. Uriel continues on and says that the situation is getting worse, the kingdom is clearly becoming dysfunctional, and the party has to be able to rely on each other. The party sets up a guard and resolves to get through the tourney and to track down any leads on house Leagallow. The party long rests, in the morning Duromar heads out when he runs into his contact who exchanges the +3 Rapier for the security deposit. Duromar is suspicious as the contact said it took longer to get the Rapier then intended, as the person who owns it doesn't normally keep it on him. Duromar accepts it but is still somewhat suspicious.
