Non Natural borders
As the nations states began to rise from the ashes of The Great Fire and expand, the issues of territorial borders became an issue. Usually natural elements would be used to mark the borders (Oceans, rivers, hills and mountains, and sometimes forests and jungles), but there were multiple times times where such terrain was not convenient. This proved to have long lasting repercussions when a border was in question, The war for the neck is one such instance, a minor territorial dispute that escalated and eventually subjugated Rasmar into becoming the client state of Astana. Something needed to be done.
The Dwarves pioneered the method that would be adopted by almost everyone that didn't fully control the landmass they inhabited, once the border treaties were written, a delegation of surveyors would be sent from both parties to calculate where the imaginary line would be. colossal pieces of rock would be carved out and then transported to the locations, new feats of engineering and magic were pioneered just to make the rock transportable. Once the rock was at location it would be enchanted with magic to protect it from the elements and from being tampered with by either side, the spacing was such that each rock was within visual range of each other, these pieces of rock would be called Obelisks. The Obelisks were about 6 stories high, buried 3 stories deep, for a total of 9 stories and was about 24 feet in diameter.
Rumor has it that the initial problem of extracting the rock was overcame when an ancient Golem Army was discovered, but that's unsubstantiated at best.
Though not nearly as common the elves also pioneered a method of marking borders, they would infuse trees with magic that altered it's color, these trees would then be used to mark the borders. This method isn't really used in any official capacity outside of Sostex, though it has found popularity among private citizens and organizations as property markers and decoration.
To ensure the borders weren't being tampered with each country would send out surveyors, usually every 10 years or so, to insure no altercations had been made (Either due to nature or other means).
