Devotary of Order

The Devotary of Order works with the nobles and the monarchy to write and establish the laws of Mercadia. Since the Last Night, the nobles and the king have lived secluded lives of luxury, only reaching out to the populace for taxes. When the Church stepped in as the de-facto government, a branch was needed to parley with the established government. Priests of Order meet with the nobles in the various towns and hamlets of Mercadia, ensuring that the church can maintain its control of the government and that the nobles stay rich and happy. The Winged of Order draft the bills that are sent to the priests and the nobles to be ratified into law.

Tenets of Faith

The Devotary of Order understands that without its work, the rest of the church could not function. It is imperative the nobles and the king remain secluded and unconcerned for the populace of Mercadia. The laws they pass are the fuel that keep Mercadia fed.

Priesthood

Priests of Order live a dual life. They must socialize with the nobles- in order to gain their friendship and compliance- while also understanding and empathizing with the commoners and passing laws that benefit them. Staying  true to the church is difficult for these priests, as the allure of riches and wine appeals to many. Becoming a Priest of Order is a political process- requiring making friends in the right places and having written the right laws.

Gaining Wings

Applicants to the Devotary of Order must write hypothetical bills that they believe would benefit the church or the people, and present them to a Priest of Order. This process is more diplomatic and political than it appears, and most Winged of Order already know a priest or a noble.
