The Wardens

The Order of the Wardens is a religious organization that worships the Warden (Ataos). There are many Wardens that serve as spiritual leaders of remote villages, but there are others that travel throughout the land to be of service. The Warden's concern rests on all of the inhabitants of Merida and his disciples provide aid to everyone in need.
The Order has a monastery south of the shrine of the Gracious Lady. When people from all over Merida come to participate in the Pilgrimage that culminates in the Festival of the Binding, the pilgrimage officially starts at the Shrine of the Warden. The Shrine of the Warden is little more than a wooden longhouse that houses the Abbot and those disciples that help the Wardens that are out in the world.
The disciples joke that the only reason they've managed to survive as an Order this long has been the support of the royal family in Tylren, the alms of the villagers and the charity of the Order of the Gracious Lady. The funds that flow into the Order of the Gracious Lady because of the sale of Aval Blanc. There are other wineries in Merida, but the myth about the health benefits of drinking the Lady's wine helps it to continue to take a healthy share of the market.
Abbot Milind and the men and women that keep the order going are usually made up of farmers, hunters, and outdoor folk that are used to living rough. They are disciples of prayer, but they also are taught to fight to defend and protect the weak. They wander throughout Merida, from the southernmost parts of The Dales to the the Patchwork Fields in the North.  The Wardens travel in pairs: a mentor and an apprentice. Should you see them on the roads, you will recognize them by their dark green robes. They carry weapons as the Warden himself was a defender of the weak. Generally, the mentor is someone who has served the Warden for at least several years.
The Wardens travel the roads of Merida from the North to the South, staying in villages when possible. They bring news and instructions from Abbot Milind and fellowship to the Warden that is in the village or town. The good that the Wardens bring to the people are Merida varies: They defend the weak, they look for the lost, they help clear up mysterious goings on and keep most bandits looking over their shoulders on the more remote roads.
With later advances in technology, some hundreds of years later, the Wardens become a group that is only useful or needed in The Dales and remote places like Patchwork Fields. There aren’t many people who need defending in the cities of Merida. At least that’s what city officials say.
