7. The Story So Far

A thousand years ago, the Cabal Aeternus and their Helstraad Empire dared to breach the veil between worlds, tearing open an unstable rift. This folly unleashed the Wild Weave, a corrupting force that tainted both the Dark East and the continent of Merra. Foreign magic warped flora, fauna, and men alike, and from the rift spewed fiends, igniting an era known in dread as the Incursion.   In response, the Pantheon of Prime Gods summoned their avatars—mortals infused with divine power. They marched upon Hel, the capital of the Helstraad Empire and the very heart of the malignant rift. The avatars, led by Azuth, the God of Magic, cast a mighty spell of mending to seal the rift. Yet, the spell went awry. The rift was closed, but the native Weave was obliterated, and Azuth himself was lost to the void.   Only one avatar survived the ordeal, the others perished in the battle or the spell's aftermath. Thus ended the Era of Magic, and the weakened gods retreated into slumber, unable to rejuvenate without the Weave. Helm, the God of Protection, alone remained vigilant, his avatar returning to Merra where a hollow victory was celebrated. In time, mortal corruption twisted the tale, exalting Helm as the sole savior, and other religions were swiftly eradicated, their gods powerless in their sleep.
In the present day, in the state of Dezaria, Helm’s worship reigns supreme. Magic, now forbidden, survives only in whispers. Yet, in the village of Junstol, a group of friends, calling themselves the "Goats," unearthed dark secrets while investigating a boy’s disappearance. They discovered a werewolf and an ancient ruin celebrating forgotten heroes who once sealed the rift.
Reports of fiends and mutants resurfaced, dismissed by those in power who believed the rift a relic of the past. Among the Goats, Gilles de Rais was contacted by Azuth, who revealed he had been trapped in the void, not perished. The god warned that the mending spell was unraveling, the Wild Weave creeping back into the world, and with it, Azuth's tenuous return. Magic, though dangerous and corrupting, was reawakening.   Azuth’s plan was not to seal the rift again but to cleanse the Weave before it entered the world. The Goats, through trials and battles, helped restore some of Azuth's power, activating an ancient temple pivotal to his scheme. Yet, Bal’aur harbored a dark secret, having freed a malevolent spirit from a doll.   To succeed, Azuth needed other gods awakened to form a new pantheon. Avatars were already stirring, tasked with reawakening their divine masters. Amidst this chaos, an ancient threat re-emerged. A member of the Cabal, known as the Steelcaller, wielding control over metal, had survived the millennia. With the returning Weave, his powers were reborn, and with an army of constructs and orcs, he unleashed havoc upon Dezaria.   Within the Goats, Eberon, haunted by a specter of the Murder God since birth, embraced his dark destiny. At Mt. Dar Castle, he slew his father, becoming the god's avatar, a necessary act to escape the Steelcaller's clutches.

During a fierce battle at Helm's temple, where Bal’aur, now enthralled, led orcs against them, Eberon’s cursed transformation was revealed. As a monstrous beast, he aided his friends before fleeing into the wild.   Gilles de Rais fell in battle, his soul merging with Azuth’s temple. Bal’aur, freed from Steelcaller’s thrall, was nursed back to health by the gods and a specter named Cailus Blacktooth, a former Cabal member turned Azuth’s ally. The Goats eventually found Eberon again, now a deadly avatar of Bhaal. In a tragic encounter, Eberon was slain by Bal’aur, cementing Bhaal's place in the new pantheon, a boon fraught with peril.   The Wild Weave's chaos persisted, mutating creatures and birthing fiends. Amidst this turmoil, an avatar of Helm, Ihra, caused a rift within the Order of Helm. Opponents fled to Voystock, while most pledged allegiance to Ihra, who promised to protect Merra. The Goats were tasked by Ihra with missions critical to her plans, including retrieving a wizard named Andrey and venturing to the floating isle of Hyemsfrey.   In Hyemsfrey, the Goats encountered the old dwarf king, seeking his lost successor, Orm Deftfingers, or his second son, Cnut. They delved into the city's politics and secrets, their actions shaping the fate of the sky city and the unfolding saga of gods and mortals.
