Personal history
Joss was born in Shui. By all accounts his father was a sailor and his mother a weaver, making it difficult to find records of his early years.
Joss enlisted in the Rouyennese army during the Islan Rebellion in 338 P.A. His officers reported him to be an adequate soldier, good at following orders and getting others to do the same. Despite his youth, he was promoted to Sergeant during his first year of service. In 340 P.A. his commanding officer was killed in battle and Joss successfully led his unit to victory earning him the officer rank of Captain. His soldiers’ reports indicate that he was “an officer who wasn’t afraid to be a soldier” and willing to fight as well as give orders. He was well-respected and well-liked for this philosophy.
Joss was promoted to Major upon the completion of the Islan Rebellion in 342 P.A. and granted a knighthood by King Werner Fron. He married Lady Brianne Prideoak, youngest daughter of the Prideoak family, in 344 P.A. The Tubalts lived in Fronhold with Joss training new soldiers from 344-356 P.A. Brianne bore Joss 4 children in this time: Boone, Cole, Alicia, and Trystan. King Werner himself requested Joss Tubult act as a combat instructor to the students of The Order and the Tubults moved to Westemell.
He served as a combat instructor for the arcanists. His students have said that he has “the patience of an oyster and the endurance of a bear” and he will work with them for unending hours until their technique is perfect. He has been known to accompany students on their nights out and buy them drinks.
In 378 P.A. he suffered a freak accident involving a student’s familiar that cost him his eye. Upon his recovery he returned to teaching, but only as an instructor in tactics.
When Colonel Urbane Rackett retired in 385 P.A. after the failure of the CURSED program, Joss was made Combat Director. He has pushed for the integration of more combat-style learning scenarios during the arcanist’s years of magical training and been successful in creating mages who are able to fend for themselves without magic. He also assisted in the design, development, and implementation of the Arcane Soldier Program.
Joss’ wife, Brianne, died of natural causes in 394 P.A.
