Reticence

Structure

Ciavy’s rule was brutal. Denizens were forced to follow her rules or go into hiding. Her departure has left a power vacuum that the goblinoids and shifters fight to fill.
The deep jungles of the islands of Reticence, hold many small clans and tribes who, other than fighting for territory pr hunting grounds, do their best not to interact with one another.
  • Shifter and goblinoid tribes are often led by whoever is strongest, proven in a life or death duel.
Ghostwise Halflings (or Hin) vote for their leader who then serves until their death.
  • Firbolgs live in small family groups and carefully debate every decision.
  • Kenku also live in small family groups usually led by a matriarch.
The two “cities” on the island serve as gathering places for the the races should the need arise; Moddar for the Shifters and Camman for the Ghostwise Halflings.

History

  • 0 PC- 2789 PC: Reticence has always remained separated from the rest of the world. Even in the days when many dragons roamed from land to land, the residents of Reticence simply tried to keep their heads low and be left alone.
  • 2790 PC: The last sighting of a dragon on Reticence.
  • 3345 PC: Ciavy the Jungle Stalker, a green dragon, arrives and claims Reticence as her domain, forcing many of the Reticence residents into servitude.
  • 3697 PC: Ciavy leaves, forcing many of her servants to brave the seas to accompany her.
  • 3699 PC: The shifters and goblinoids go to war.
  • 3712 PC: Some flee the conflict, setting out on rafts to follow Ciavy.
Reticence

Demography and Population

Everyday life on Reticence is a struggle for survival. The war between goblinoids and shifters is bloody and brutal, and neither side cares who else gets hurt in their struggle for power. In addition to the shifters and goblins, the jungles of Reticence are teeming with hungry beasts looking for their next meal. Each race has adapted to this harsh environment in different ways.
  • Shifters: Shifters travel in packs and, with their own sharp teeth and claws, are perfectly capable of putting up a fight. Most beasts have learned to be wary of attacking even a single shifter.
  • Hin (Ghostwise Halflings): The halflings’ speed, luck, and ability to communicate without making a sound makes them exceptionally difficult to find in the thick jungles.
  • Firbolgs: A Firbolg’s size is usually enough to dissuade most predators, but their magical ability to communicate with plants and beasts and to seamlessly blend into their surroundings is their strongest defense mechanism.
  • Kenku: The kenku have developed their own method of communication that involves a conglomeration of jungle sounds. Their ability to mimic the sounds of creatures much larger or fiercer than themselves is typically enough to scare off any potential attackers.
  • Goblins: Goblins cluster in large enough numbers that most beasts leave them alone. One or two wandering goblins, however, are the perfect afternoon snack for the creatures of the forest.

Military

Every resident of Reticence has learned to fight because it is necessary for survival. There is no organized military, or structured training amongst any of the tribes or clans.

Technological Level

Arcane Magic

Rare to unheard of amongst the residents of Reticence. Some knowledge was learned from Cievy and has been passed down through the generations.

Natural Magic

The most abundant magic on the islands. Firbolgs in particular have an innate connection to this magic, as do some shifters and halflings.

Divine Magic

Another rare magic on the islands. There is no organized clergy so typically anyone gifted with divine magic is viewed as “chosen” by one of the gods.

Religion

The shifters of Reticence do not honor gods, but the primal spirits of the earth and animals they live among.
Amongst the halflings there is little time for worship or organized religion in daily life. However, they have been known to say a prayer here and there and to honor the dead according to custom.
The Kenku know the name of their maker, but he has little interest in them. Some pray to him nonetheless, but he is not known to answer.
