“When an Ancient Race goes to war, the whole world quakes in fear.” – Daedric Wintersprite, Draconic Historian
A centuries long conflict between Metallic and Chromatic dragons that led to the creation of the Dragonborn and the near extinction of the dragon species. It began with the common occurrence of a territorial dispute between a Black and a Bronze dragon. The history is unclear as to which dragon struck the other first, but the Bronze called others of its race to arms and they struck back furiously against the Blacks. Other Chromatics bristled at their borders and territorial disputes between dragons began to increase in number. The more social Metallics came to each other’s aid when called and small disputes quickly turned to full-fledged battles. It became evident that the conflict was escalating from small disputes to a racial war. Lioth the Goldscale stepped forward to organize and lead the troops of Metallics and with their united power the Chromatics began to fall in large numbers. In response, Estyrath the Ember Storm, called the remaining Chromatics together under his command and together they struck a great blow against the Metallics. The war continued, both sides suffering losses and they found their numbers slowly dwindling. General Estyrath was felled in an ambush attack by the Metallics and his son, Emeleth the Redhide, stepped forward to subdue and unite the scattering Chromatics. He was shocked by the poor state of their army, their numbers less than a couple dozen. Emeleth called for a ceasefire and, with his strongest Generals, met with Lioth and her Generals. Together they crafted the Dragonborn race, to prevent further loss of Dragon life. For a hundred years their solution worked and they began to rebuild their races. But the Dragonborn inherited more than their appearance from their creators and they rebelled, refusing to be used or enslaved any more. The Metallics and Chromatics came together for one final battle to end the war. Emeleth and Lioth found themselves fighting each other, and they each suffered greatly. Lioth’s left hand was lost in the fray and she retaliated by claiming Emeleth’s eye. As they paused over the battlefield to recover from their wounds and looked down upon the death and destruction, they took note of their army’s numbers and found them too few. They immediately called for the fighting to end. As they took stock of the state of their species and their kingdoms, they found that the humans had laid claim to large swathes of their lands. Faced with a common enemy, they descended upon Temell, the human capital, and tore it asunder. The Fron family stepped forward to negotiate with the dragons and to serve as mediators as the Chromatics and Metallics attempted to find peace.
