On the 10th day of the second month, Gahsinaend, a heartwarming celebration known as the Rypsree, takes centre stage.
This cherished tradition has its origins intertwined with the Mirran culture and has found its way into the hearts of the Helman people, adopting both its customs and its name from the tongues of these two intertwined cultures,
Merrani and
Helani, translating to "Winter Kiss."
Historical Roots
The festival finds its roots in a heartwarming tale set during the early stages of the Mirran era. Legend has it that a young man embarked on a quest along the shores of Sey, driven by the desire to find the most exquisite smooth stone for his beloved, a priestess devoted to
Preeh.
With her faith emphasizing the significance of gifting, this act held immense importance. Weeks were spent scouring the shores until, at last, he chanced upon a stone of remarkable smoothness adorned with exquisite tones. This token was tenderly offered to his love. In a delightful turn, she bestowed upon the stone a kiss before returning it to him, prompting him to press his lips where hers had touched.
Observance and Traditions
At the heart of the festival lies the gesture of gifting a smooth stone, the level of its smoothness symbolizing the depth of the sentiment. However, in the frigid expanse of the Northern tundra, the
Merrwan have developed a unique variation. Here, a rough stone is bestowed upon esteemed friends as a mark of honour. While this tradition is seldom witnessed beyond the tundra's bounds, the constant elements in the region naturally bestow a weathered roughness upon the stones, making them all the more precious. The recipient, in turn, might opt to kiss the stone before returning it, allowing the giver to feel the warmth of the kiss on the cold stone.
The choice of stone holds no significance; however, when the recipient is a love interest, the use of obsidian takes on a special role. This practice marks the initiation of the
Obsidian of Love couring tradition, where obsidian stands as a powerful symbol of affection and devotion.
Essential Elements
The festival is characterized by the exchange of smooth rocks, and on certain occasions, obsidian, among participants. Families also join in the festivities, offering gifts to express their love and care for one another.
A common sight during the Winter Embrace Festival is the representation of
Searl, whose influence is profound, echoing the life-giving ideals promoted by the
Helman Council.
