Gròr the Bluntheaded
Gròr, often referred to as "The Bluntheaded, is one of the houseless Dwarves
who wanders the Vales of Anduin and the Grey Mountain Narrows. It is said that
he lost his beard when he was captured and tortured by
Goblins in the ruins of the Dwarven Fortress called the Greydelve,
which was the home of his ancestors for many long ages
until the Goblins took it. In truth, his beard was cut in a
quarrel with servants of the Elvenking.
Today, Gròr is a wandering tinker and blacksmith, travelling
all over the Wilderland on his journeys, offering his services as either a smithy or as protection for the many traders that walk these lands. Wherever he
goes, he tells tales of the Goblins, and tries to rally the
Dwarves and other Free Folk to his cause. Even the other
Dwarves think Gròr to be mad in his dream and fear that the
Greydelve is forever lost to Durin’s folk.
Since the death of the Dragon and the re-establishment
of the King under the Mountain, Gròr has visited Dáin
Ironfoot’s court once each year to demand that Dáin send
warriors to reclaim the Greydelve, to which he has been always been denied.
Gròr would say he knows all the Dwarves who live in the Narrows and along the Anduin, and
he is an excellent guide to the region — to be more precise, he
knows all the paths in the region as well as he remembers
every knot and hair in his now diminished beard. Whether or not
he is a good travelling companion depends on his mood
— on the wrong day, Gròr can be as treacherous and bitter
as a Petty-dwarf. He has keen dislike of the Elves, who twice now have captured him for apparently
trespassing in the Woodland Realm.
He wears a tooth from Scatha the Worm on a golden
chain around his neck. This talisman is a reminder of all
that has been taken from the Dwarves.
