Old Troll's cave
'The Old Troll's lair is a deep cave in the lee of one of the mounds of the South Downs. For a furlong or more around the cave, he's stacked piles of bones and skulls as warding totems against intruders. Closer to the cave these piles grow in size; the teetering bone-piles near the cave entrance are taller than a tall man. The wind whistles through thes grisly landmarks, keening like a banshee. This is a dark place, a place of Shadow.'The company of adventurers tracked the Old Troll back to his home cave in the South Downs to do final battle with him. They already managed to wound him severely along the way, but now the final battle was there. And with slashing swords, flying arrows and smashing axes the troll fell to the company. The troll's treasure was now theirs. Along with some gold and other trinkets the company found two very interesting items:
- A map written on goatskin parchment that once belonged to Timeas Heatherton. It depicts the area around Bree. There are no place-names on the map itself. Around the borders of the map are runes.
- A sealed letter, with a note saying: 'Whoever delivers this letter safely to Thorin' Hall in the Blue Mountains will receive a reward of 100 silver pennies'. The letter is clearly written by a dwarf.
