The Wardens

The Wardens are the guards of Bree and the Bree-land.    In addition to the keeper at each gate, Bree employs a small number of Wardens, who keep the peace an deal with problems around the villages. Like their counterparts in the Shire, the wardens spend more time dealing thieves or two-legged miscreants. More Wardens are called up only when needed – on market days, or when a large number of strangers pass through town. Most young men spend a season or two on the Warden’s roster, especially if they hope to get work as a caravan guard, which is considered an acceptable adventure among the Bree-folk.   Being a Warden carries with it a degree of prestige – Wardens get to carry a weapon, and even wear a helmet sometimes – but little danger. The Reeve appoints the Chief Warden in Bree and in Combe, who serves until they become too old or infirm to carry out their notespecially- onerous duties. The position comes with a stipend, and the right to wear a red feather in one’s cap.
