Curator Order
The Curator Order is an ancient scholarly organisation dedicated to the preservation of knowledge and technology throughout the galaxy. Established by galactic powers many thousands of years ago, they have persisted through multiple galactic dark ages to this day. The Curator Order is based out of three large starbases located at different points in the galaxy, and is not subordinate to any government. Based on archaeological evidence collected at a number of dig sites, the Curator Order originated as the survivors of a planet-wide bioweapon that merged with several other institutions to form the modern organisation.
The Curators provide research assistance to organisations willing to pay, including governments, universities, corporations, and ultra-rich individuals. They offer limited real-time access to their extensive databanks, specialist information on specific topics, and, to their most trusted customers, scientific advisors. It is also rumoured that the Curators sell detailed intelligence on their less favourable clients, though this has not been confirmed with certainty.
Although the Curator space stations are self-sustaining, they use their acquired energy credits to purchase supplies, information, and access from the star nations of the galaxy. Curator agents are generally well-respected throughout the galaxy, even in more insular societies. There is an informal agreement amongst the Galactic Community to refrain from aggressive actions against the Curator Order, due to their immense scientific and cultural significance.
Applications to join the Curator Order are common, but successful ones are incredibly rare. The Curators only accept those with extensive or specialist knowledge in their fields, and among those candidates, there is intense competition to join the Order.
