Hiverion
Hiverion is a habitable arctic world, notable for being the homeworld of the Voor and the capital of the Voor Technocracy. The planet, the fourth satellite of the Exedor System, experiences a regular, yet strange climatic phenomenon. Every million years or so, the planet rapidly cools over the span of several centuries, with temperatures dropping an average of fifteen degrees celsius. This is due to a combination of synchronised oddities in the orbit, axial tilt, microbial environment, and underground water systems that flow across the planet.
The Voor evolved during the most recent interglacial period, which lasted for far longer than average - approximately 1.5 million years. Due to this, they (and many other species on the planet) were drastically ill-suited for the sudden cold snap when it came. It began in the early 1900s CE, and despite the best efforts of the Voor, they were unable to stave it off. Instead, they adapted to their new environment with cybernetics and semi-underground domed cities utilising nuclear or geothermal power. The Voor were eventually able to fully adapt to their new arctic environment, and have since conquered their homeworld again.
When the nations of Hiverion were dissolved by the international scientific council in 2041 CE, the planet was divided into 74 sectors: 72 regular sectors, and two polar sectors. The capital of the planet (and by extension the Technocracy) is Sector Zero, located on the equator where the original international scientific council was based. It features many bureaucratic offices and scientific insitutions, as well as the main campus of the Hiverion Research Institute, one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the galaxy. Much of the population continues to live in semi-underground domed cities, but significant numbers live on the surface.
Aside from Technocracy institutions and scientific research, Hiverion's primary industry is mining, followed by manufacturing. Most food is imported from offworld, as farms are more easily established on worlds with more temperate climates. Former farms have been repurposed into factories or otherwise budgeted for future expansion on the planet. Many parts of the planet have been totally set aside as environmental reservations, with localisaed climate regulation allowing pre-glacial species to continue living in some parts of the world. The Vi Vidan mountain range is considered to be one of the most breathtaking in the galaxy.
