Transubstantiation Synthesis
Transubstantiation synthesis (occasionally called synthetic ascension) is the process by which an organic being is transformed into a synthetic being . Originally pioneered within the Lacertan Techno-Protectorate, and later the Lokken Mechanists, this technology is still highly experimental. Transubstantiation synthesis begins by first constructing a synthetic body and mind for the organic to inhabit once the process is complete, and ensuring the code is as compatible with the individual as possible. The actual transfer is relatively simple, connecting the organic and positronic brains directly, allowing the mind to inhabit both spaces, and slowly disconnecting the original brain. The procedure does not involve any loss of consciousness, in order to ensure complete continuity of self. Once complete, the individual fully inhabits the synthetic body, and their old body is disposed of. Overall, the process takes approximately five hours to complete.
The first instance of transubstantiation synthesis was conducted by the Lacertan Techno-Protectorate in the first half of the 23rd century CE. With their species unable to reproduce due to a novel genetic disease called the Waning, their minds were uploaded to an identity repository as they neared the end of their natural lifespans. By 2231 CE, the entire organic species had become extinct, uploaded to their virtual world. Research into synthetic bodies was carried out virtually by the digitsed population and artificial intelligence, and work in the real world conducted by droids the Lacertans had produced. In 2233 CE, the first Lacertans were able to transfer their identities into their new synthetic bodies, effectively returning the species to life. This process has been heavily guarded by the Techno-Protectorate, and has not been replicated elsewhere. In the 2330s CE, the Lokken Mechanists devised the modern process of transubstantiation synthesis, directly transferring organic minds into positronic matrices.
As of 2356 CE, approximately two hundred million individuals outside of the Lacertan Techno-Protectorate have undergone transubstantiation synthesis. Despite papers and studies repeatedly stressing the continuity of consciousness in the process, the technology is widely distrusted. It is especially disliked within the more spiritual communities of the galaxy, who steadfastly claim the transfer of an organic mind to a synthetic one is effectively an act of suicide. Formerly organic individuals have been examined by psionically-gifted people, who have confirmed the synthetic bodies do not have a presence within the Shroud. The process is also controversial within the Lokken Mechanists themselves, although the majority of the political leadership support the rapid expansion of facilities to support transubstantiation synthesis. The Kingdom of Yondarim and the Divine Compact have reportedly threatened to enact sanctions on the Lokken Mechanists if research continues, but that has had little effect on it.
