Anatomy

The bluish-gray leaves form a tightly-wrapped cone. During early summer, the cones open up slightly and large blossoms emerge from the top. They have broad orange petals and emit a sharp, sour smell.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The bitter and acidic leaves are known to reduce nausea. They can be consumed raw, but usually it is preferred to extract the valuable juices by cutting and pressing them. The seeds are commonly used as a spice. They contribute a burning and slighty nut-like component to the taste that is popular in food preserves, condiments, and marinades.
