Crab Fisherman

Crab fishermen, also known as crabbers is a profession known to people as a hard and dirty job. It has gained a notorious reputation due to the demanding physical labour the job requires of the men doing it.   The daily life of the crab fishermen will typically be on their small boat, the fishermen will normally spend the better part of the week before they return to the shore, during their time on the sea, the fishermen will have to endure whatever the sea might throw at them. Their day starts before dawn to maximize the time available for setting and hauling in the crab pots. These pots are large, reinforced traps baited with fish designed to catch the massive sea crabs.   Crab fishing is a lucrative business, especially when the seasons peak around the middle of the rainy seasons when the fishermen can make a large amount of money, the Fishermen often work on a share system, where each crew member gets a percentage of the total catch's value, most of the fishermen can earn enough during the peak seasons to sustain them and their families during the slower season when they might only go out fishing to prop up the earnings with some extra pocket cash.   Crab fishing has a rich cultural significance in coastal regions of the Empire of Dercia . It's often depicted in local tales and songs, highlighting the perils and rewards of this tough profession. The bravery and resilience of crabbers are celebrated in festivals and ceremonies.   Some generations back, the industry was facing a crisis where the fishermen had almost extinguished the supply of crabs in the coastal waters, to avoid the collapse of the industry, the local governors with the support of Empress Krea Astalles placed a 10-year ban on fishing and then afterwards placed limits on to how much the fishermen could catch and despite the trouble of enforcing the new law, the crabs in the coastal waters slowly recovered and the hard and dirty work of the crabbers could continue.

I love the detail that the authorities had to ban fishing for a bit to allow the crabs to recover their population. That's a nice touch.   I can definitely see why this would be seen as a dirty job!
