Tax collection

The Imperial tax collection is managed by a bureaucratic system which oversees the collection of the Empire of Dercias taxes.   Just as the Empire is divided into provinces, likewise is the collection of the taxes. The provinces are governed by a Praetorian Prefect responsible for collecting the taxes.   Exactores are the name given to the local tax collectors, they are local officials who the Pretorian Prefects employ to collect the tax. Each of them has their district or town, it's not uncommon for them to be from the local population and this sometimes helps smooth over any tensions that might be, but still, they are among the least popular in the local neighbourhood. Some of their duties are to assess the value of lands, trade activities and the like.   While the tax collectors are some of the most hated professions in the Empire, there is one job that is more hated, these are the Auxiliary Exactores, these are deployed to areas and regions that are known to be troublesome, either due to the remoteness of these places or they have never fully accepted the rule of Pearlhal, these places are typically some of those bordering the wilderness to the South. These Auxiliary Exactores are typically supported by legionaries to ensure that some form of tax are paid.
"Look over there, those pests are here to take every coin we have... predators"
Overheard in a local tavern in the region of Rhuvenna

Methods of Payment
Coins are the most common method of payment for merchants, nobles and urban citizens as these groups typically have more Coins than citizens in the rural regions. In the rural regions, its more common to pay with crops, animals or other forms of produce.   Citizens can provide labour as payment for taxes, this is most commonly used by young rural people who travel to the city in the hope of finding a way to support their family, if there is a large public construction project underway, they can offer their help in return for being exempt for taxes for the duration of the period the construction is underway.
