Trials and Bribery in Theros

There is no bail in Theros, although a King can dismiss charges at will. This is rarely done. Bribery is the most frowned-upon crime among the general populace. Because of the ill, it brings to one's reputation, no-one native to Theros would ever attempt it, although they might – if very rich – bargain with the Kings to drop (severe) charges in return for forfeiture of valuable property, vessel, or cargo.   There are no lawyers in Theros, although there are a few "professional witnesses" who for a fee will state a case to their client's best advantage before an Elocutor.   Expulsion from the Settlement is the fate of any of those who are caught swearing they saw something that did not in fact occur, or that they were not present to see. It is known that many Settlements employs clerics and Mages, who remain hidden behind concealing tapestries, to cast Zone of Truth at a signal from an Elocutor.   Inexplicably when a sentence of death is administered and the appropriate information filed and logged, the convicted has never made it to the gallows. This has given to the rise of the notion that anyone who is given a death conviction the God of death herself comes for them and takes them away on her "black ark" never to be seen nor heard from again. Needless to say, crimes that end with a Death conviction are rare and people that have made it to the day after their conviction rarer still.
