Forgeborn
In the days leading up to the divine war, many of the gods became consumed with a fit of jealousy that would see them attempt to wipe the vryn from the face of the land. The god of technology, Brigh not wishing to have his worshipers stricken from the face of mirendakor or the majesty of his technology be used for the heresy that the other gods were planning. He “sank” the island workshop/nation that would become amphryn into the aether void and left the world behind. The records of the forgeborn are far more complete than any of the other races. In the years following the pure flow of aether began to twist and warp the land. The people of the island were not spared this fate either, but seeking to avoid further damage to his people, fineli gave of himself to provide new bodies for his people after much time and effort on the gods part the forgeborn were born, and the land itself was changed in his metallic likeness.
With their new forms almost eternal the forgeborn lived in the aether void for eight thousand years. Developing new technologies and vessels with which they explored many regions of the void and mapping out all of the network of aether tunnels that crossed its landscape.
During the early years of the third age, they managed to resurface Amphryn bringing with them knowledge and artifacts from a bygone age. With the arrival of the forgeborn ushered in a new age for the land, borders were cautiously reopened to welcome these new neighbors. They were the first to propose mutual cooperation amongst the kingdoms and usher in a new an of relative peace.
Regions: The Forgeborn are located primarily on the island of Amphyrn. They have only extended into the immediate lands of Qirat, Namine, and Immoren.
FORM AND FUNCTION
In the past Forgeborn were once other creatures with flesh-and-blood bodies, but their conscious minds were transplanted into articulated bodies of iron, steeL brass, and wood, driven by pistons and springs. Each is as distinctive in appearance as other people are. Now entities spend a fortune on these new bodies, while others scrape together anything that will work-especially if the subject is aging or ill All Forgeborn are made in a humanoid shape. The vast majority fall into one of two styles: those that are roughly human-sized, with articulated joints, hands, feet, and crystal lens eyes; and a version made by dwarves that mirrors their shorter, stouter body shape. Forgeborn mechanisms are more than mechanicaL because the Forgeborn are machines with souls. Their arms and legs are driven by everwound springs. Their minds are actuated by memory gears, transverse cognition gearing, and the marvel of a soul gem connected directly to a maze of silver and mithril steam, spark, and magical conduits. These elements reside in a shell of iron, brass, and steel
FORGEBORN CONSTRUCTION
The range of Forgeborn anatomy in all its variants is remarkable, but all Forgeborn share some common parts.
Everwound Springs. These magical springs provide energy over long periods, effectively acting as the power sources for most of the Forgeborn moving parts. A broken everwound spring results in the loss of function in that digit or limb.
Soul Gem. *The mind of a Forgeborn creature is as sharp as that of any flesh-and-blood soul but it is more portable. The animating, vital principle of a Forgeborn is it’s Will, its personality, its mind-are retained in a soul gem. Its destruction means the death of that Forgeborn.
