Heath Gaelfrey

Heath Gaelfrey

Heath Gaelfrey was born an Air Genasi and raised by a human mother name Leanne Gaelfrey in a village within the Underforest, Vaden Falls, which is part of the Country of Khao. Even though there is a diverse community within Khao and even in the village of Vaden Falls, Heath did not find anyone that looked similar to him early in his life. He was gifted with flight ever since he could remember which was a great boon for the people of the jungle village that he lived in his whole life. This also meant that he could get to and from the floating city and the Underforest easily and could learn all sorts of histories and magics. He never really questioned this until he grew up a little bit to understand more about the world. At the tender age of 12, he went up to Leanne and asked why he looked so different from everyone else including her. She explained to him that he was an orphan that followers from the Church of Babylon found on the outskirts of the village. He found this answer to be suitable for the time being but as he grew older he started to question this answer further as he looked into the religions of the continent of Kalketesh. At 20 years old he knew a lot more about the patrons and even picked up his own patron deity to follow, Oun, as he is very knowledgeable and actively seeks the truths of the world through dreams. He knew a lot about the deities from the White, Grey, Green, and Blue Pantheons but not much about the Black Pantheon which is important in Vaden Falls because the main church that the overseer, Vassilius Drake, actively supports is Babylon, a part of the Black Pantheon. As he finished up his research into the Black Pantheon, he questioned whether or not a follower of Babylon would truly save and even give away a child that they found laying on the outskirts of a village for free. As he researched this topic he found that Babylon is widely considered around the continent to be a devil. Thinking on this he wondered why a follower of Babylon would just give away a baby for free with no strings attached as it is widely known that he makes deals with the people that walk Kalketesh that leave them unsatisfied. Coming to this conclusion, he decided to confront Leanne about it as he was concerned that she gave Babylon something irreplaceable in exchange for raising the child that had swept in that day.   When he went home that day, he mulled over what he would ask her and whether it would be a bad idea to do so. What if Babylon made it so she couldn't speak about the Oath that she gave him in exchange for the orphan? What would happen to her if she were to break her oath? He decided to ask her anyways coming to the conclusion that if she can't speak about it she would just not answer, and if what she said originally is the complete truth with no strings attached, then he would have nothing to worry about. As he confronted her about the dilemma, her usual joyous face wavered and turned into a frown even if it was just for a second. She then explained that the original story was the complete truth and that she truly did not make an Oath with Babylon. Unlike before, Heath was not completely satisfied with this answer as he knew there was something that she was hiding from him just by the way her demeanor changed for a split second. He asked around the village to the people that were there for as long as he could remember. They all gave the same response as Leanne did, all coming to the consensus that he was adopted. At this point, he was feeling satisfied with his questioning and was about to head back home for the evening until a Tabaxi that he rarely saw out of his home was sitting outside of his home and called Heath over to him. Heath had completely forgot about this man but had a few memories of him early in his life and never got his name. The Tabaxi then introduced himself as Kezhda. They had a normal conversation until Kezdha started to pry about what Heath was doing asking all of the local people of Vaden Falls questions about his past. He responded saying that he was worried about his mother because it didn't make sense that she was able to adopt a random baby from a Church of Babylon without giving equal exchange to the devil himself. Kezhda leaned back in his chair and kind of snickered a little bit and responded to him that he knows that she didn't make a deal with Babylon. Heath, tired of hearing the same story over and over, feels deflated and finishes up the conversation and starts to head home. Kezhda stops him again and then mutters, "...But she isn't telling the whole truth to you..."   Heath's eyes perk up and gets back into the conversation to hear what he has to say. Kezhda warns him that this information could change his life forever, and asks him if he would like to hear it. Heath nods yes before he even has time to finish the question and Kezhda then says, "Your mother, Leanne, she gave birth to you; you are her biological son." Heath scoffs and believed that this old Tabaxi is senile in his final years of living. Kezhda then asked Heath if he wants him to prove he's not lying and brings out a spellbook. Heath asked how he intended on doing that, but as he asked that question, Kezhda put up a Zone of Truth around the two of them and explained to Heath that anything said within the zone is the complete truth. Heath was not really surprised at the Zone of Truth, as he has done a lot of studying in the floating city, but he was more surprised that the old Tabaxi can still cast spells. Heath then asked the big question, "Am I Leanne Gaelfrey's biological son?" Kezhda smiles a bit before answering and says, "Yes, you are Leanne Gaelfrey's biological son." Heath is bewildered at this answer and then asks immediately, "Then who is my father?!" Kezhda then replies, "I honestly do not know." Heath frowned at the answer and remembered from his studies that you can resist the effects of Zone of Truth and said to the Tabaxi that he knew that he was senile and then stormed off back home. Even though he was confident that the Tabaxi was lying, deep down he just had to ask his mother if it was true. Once Heath got home that night, he went right up to his mother and asked her if he is her biological son. She had a confused look on her face and said to him that they don't look alike and why he would get that idea. When Heath mentioned the name Kezhda her face turned into a panic state for a few seconds and she quickly answers him saying that he's getting on in years and that he was just messing with him. She scolded him and told him to never visit Kezhda ever again. At this point, Heath knew that she was hiding something either in her story or something to do with the Tabaxi. He decided that he wanted to uncover the whole truth about the Tabaxi at the very least and left in the dead of night to find him at his home again.   When he arrived he found him outside almost as if he knew that Heath was going to come back for more. Heath asked him who he really is and why he was trying to trick him into believing that he is the biological son of Leanne. Kezhda then tells him that he was the one that helped Leanne give birth to him way back when and that the reason she said that he is adopted is because she didn't want him looking for his father. He then explained that he knows the father but couldn't answer the question of who Heath's father is in the Zone of Truth because he never got his name. Heath started putting the pieces together but was confused at why he wouldn't know the name of the husband of the woman he was helping with the birthing process. He explained that he came to the village after traversing the tricky forests of the country of Khao for a few years and wanted to settle down for the rest of his days. He said that his first meeting with Leanne was when she was going through the final stages of her pregnancy and was the only one in the room that could help out with the process. He also mentioned that he didn't see anyone in the room that was with Leanne during the birthing process. He continued on to say that he did see the father eventually when he reunited them a few days after she gave birth; the father was elated to see that she was OK after the trials and tribulations of childbirth without him, but when he looked down at the child that she gave birth to, his expression turned to horror and proceeded to run back home without Leanne. Kezhda then said that he was curious about the whole thing because he had never seen a Genasi be born from a pairing of people in which neither were Genasi. He then said that when he followed the mother from the shadows he saw the house they were living in ransacked and the father no where in sight. He then states when he went over to comfort Leanne who had her newborn baby in her arms, her face was covered in anguish and asked him to never speak of this to her child when they grow up. Heath interjected for a moment and asked why the other villagers all had the same story saying that he was adopted and that there would be no way Leanne could convince everyone in the village to stick to that story. Kezhda then said that the reason why they all thought that Heath was adopted was because Leanne feigned that when she gave birth to the baby it was stillborn, and after a few days, she had a new baby that she claimed she got from the church. Heath was stunned by this new information and asked him what the race of his father is. Kezhda said that he saw that he was a wood elf just like a lot of the population in the village they were in. After this, Heath thanked Kezhda for giving him the information, even after promising that he would never speak of it again, and then left to confront his mother about the situation one last time.   In the morning Heath woke up late, as he was out all last night speaking to Kezhda, and confronted his mother who was sitting at a table in the house and looked as if she was resigned to her fate. Before Heath spoke a word, she uttered, "You are my son, my TRUE son, Heath," and then she starts to break down into tears. Heath sits down with her and embraces her to console her. After she settled down, Heath asked her a few questions about his father. Heath was uncomfortable asking this question, but asked, "...Is he my biologi-" but Leanne stopped him there, "He is absolutely your father, I have not had any relations with any other man just so we're clear." Heath sighed deeply as if relieved and then asked why he left. She answered and said that she really had no idea why he would leave after seeing their child for the first time. Heath asked what kind of work he did while he was in Khao and she explained that he was an Enforcer just as Heath was at the time. This answer explained to Heath why the father was not home very often as he was protecting the village. His final question was, "What is the name of my father?" Before Leanne answered this question she pleaded to Heath to be careful in his search as she knew that it was in his nature to seek knowledge. Heath nodded and eagerly awaited her response, "His name is Gareth Averye, but I have no clue as to where he would be right now." And then she handed him a picture of Gareth which shows an adult male wood elf with long black hair, blue eyes and a scar on the bottom right of his chin. Heath burned this information into his mind and decided that this is the path he is going to take in his life. Find his father, the reason why he left, and why he was born as an Air Genasi. He takes up the way of the Ranger and swears his favored enemy as Elves, so he can better track his father and anyone else that could resemble the picture given to him by Leanne. He sets off out of Khao and starts his search in Daborak and comes across a village, Mirewelt and hears some suspicious rumors about people disappearing without a trace.
