Grand Central Hospital

The Grand Central is a modern, newly built hospital in the north of Varenburg. A merger of Dragon Systems Inc. and Goddess of Sex financed its construction. The complex is in a former industrial area, the soil of which has been lavishly cleaned of impurities.

Once you crossed the outer park, you come to a busy, tall building complex, made of glass and steel. Nobody around you seems to even realise you're there, while your eyes flush over the building, notice brightly litten windows, see the busy people running through unknown rooms. Sometimes you see a red light flashing up, followed by noise and hectic activity.

Your steps carry you further to the building, following the faint smell of disinfectant, medicine and humans. As you enter the building through the wide door labelled with "main entrance", you approach a nurse in a flawless, white uniform. Something feels wrong for you. She doesn't seem tired. Her eyes are not empty, and her smile looks... real.

Purpose / Function

This building was planned and constructed to relieve the overburdened health system and provide better and more medical care. To achieve this, the buildings were planned to cover not only basic medical care, but also research stations, emergencies and recovery.

Architecture

The Grand General Hospital was built in a modern, clear style, with a lot of glass fronts, bright lights and good infrastructure.

Layout

The hospital is layed out around the borders of the complex, with a large, beautiful park between them. These parks are not only open to the patients, but also for the population of the neighbouring districts. Each building consists of three basement floors and five floors over the earth. Each building covers certain fields of medical care, like children ambulance, maternity ward, psych ward and surgery, but they also have their own emergency ambulance at one basement level. The emergency rooms are accessible from the inner building, from the helicopter pads at the roof and from a ramp, leading up to the street level.

The basement layer below the emergency room is there for surgery. You will find a vast number of surgery rooms there, because each building has a set of at least 6 complete surgery rooms, including the necessary teams. The teams in these surgery rooms work in 6-hour-shifts, 6 days a week. Laboratories and Diagnostics are located in the last basement layer, so is the in-house technic, like a server room.

The ground level of the buildings is always reserved for intensive care. Nurses in intensive care work for 6 hours per shift, doctors work for 8 hours per shift. The official reason for this is the high grade of concentration needed to care for patients with greater medical risks. The top 4 floors house the different stations. The hospital rooms have only one or two beds in them, a number of toilets equal to the beds in a room, a shower and a basin. The rooms are cleaned three times a day and desinfected 5 times a day, especially the bathrooms.

History

The Grand General Hospital began as an idea in the mid-80s of the last century. The two companies financing it bought a barren industrial area and spent a lot of money to clean the area up. The soil was changed completely, three basement floors were planned and executed first. Next came the rough plan for 5 buildings, surrounding a park in the middle. Each building should be five floors high and provide a seperate emergency ambulance.

Tourism

While tourism is something you would not expect for a hospital, there is a great deal of medical tourism. People come from all over the world to get surgeries or health care done here. It is well known, that the Grand Central has the best doctors, the best nurses and the most beautiful environment.

I can't help but feel that there is something faintly sinister going on here, but I couldn't tell you why. I don't know if it is the 'real smile' thing, or the 'official reason' thing, but I am suspicious.
